Easy to follow instructions, usually 4-5 steps (all pictured) and great, simple recipes (lots of pictures, everything is shown). Over 300 pages, and over 130+ recipes. There are a few pages devoted to explaining cooking (an equipment guide, a guide breaking down different cooking techniques, how to prep ingredients) that were VERY useful. Kids don't know the difference between dice and grate, or boil and simmer. These few pages are amazing, TONS of pictures on each page.This cookbook was for my 10 year old daughter (4th Grade). She is able to read and follow the instructions all by herself; she's comfortable using knives but she's intimidated using the stove alone. So I would say ages 10+ for minimal-to-no supervision, and younger kids would need help from an adult (using knives, stove and oven use), but would still enjoy the recipes. There are 6-8 pictures on each page - tons of visual help.The first recipe my daughter made was French Toast (shockingly I had never made it before!), and she did it on her own. I literally just stood and watched, she really was able to do it all herself. She wasnt sure how to crack open an egg (HA!), so there was definately some guidance I provided, but it was a success, and so tasty! Then she tried the mini-hamburger sliders, and that turned out great too. She's also made smoothies, potato rosi (hash brown patties) and homemade potato chips. Lots and lots more that she wants to try!This book has a TON of recipes, and I feel like it would appeal to lots of different tastes. I gave this book as a gift, along with a set of popsicle molds, a popsicle shaped bookmark, and an apron. The molds are needed in one recipe in particular that I thought she would want to try. She LOVED it all. Highly recommended.

This is a very good starter book for introducing cooking to a 10-12+ year old. the book is filled with color photos and glossary of terms and equipment. There are missing steps though which can leave recipes not turning out too right. Example, I found in two different recipes that one of them on the equipment list it does not mention that you need measuring spoons though it is telling you that you need a Tbsp of salt. Another was on a cake recipe that did not rise and I realized that there were no instructions in the ingredient list for baking soda. I would still recommend this for a introduction to cooking but it definitely needs an adult to review first and supervise. Overall my daughter loves the book and has made a lot of items already.

My 10 year old daughter has already used some of the recipes with great results. I am impressed with how well organized each recipe page is. It really helped her in purchasing and getting the ingredients ready, working through each step and knowning when it is 'ok' to ask a parent to do a step dealing with the oven or stove. The high quality photos make the whole process easy and interesting. Last time, we made the bread from the book and then used the freshly baked bread to make the french toast from the recipe in a different section.

This is an awesome cookbook. But they should swap the title "childrens" out for something else. The recipes in this book are real recipes young people of all ages could make. The book is full of recipes for dishes you would really want to eat and would enjoy. I have a culinary back round and think this is a great product.

I bought this for my four year old granddaughter. Her mom, who is a great cook, was very impressed with this cookbook, saying it has wonderful pictures, step-by-step instructions, and uses "real" food. She felt she would be able to use this cookbook for years. Of course, she needs help and direction now, but as she gets older, she should be able to understand it clearly by herself.

Almost perfect for my not-yet-reading 7 year old. It has photos for each step. It has way more entrees that we can actually eat at dinner (other than quesadillas and hot dogs)out than other kids cookbook. The only thing I wish it has is a picture for the ingredients for the non-readers. This book is also a great price and you know there are lots of pictures because of it's 544 pages.

Lots of food handling techniques....instructs about equipment ( good section on knives). My grandkids love it and my sister took one home for her granddaughters. One of her granddaughters has eating issues ( her list of "liked foods" is very small), her mother is hoping she tries more foods if she is preparing them herself Highly recommended

This book is much larger than expected and it's heavy. For kids, a spiral binding would be much better.Now to the food. Several reviewers indicated there were too many snacks and desserts and not enough meal recipes. I agree. Kids have no problem finding snacks & desserts to eat, most of which aren't healthy and, yes, this book offers more healthy choices. However, I would have preferred more meal (breakfast, lunch, dinner) recipes with creative ideas that kids would want to make. Very disappointed.

Beautiful. I laughed and teared up many times. This is a book to either devour in one sitting/laying because you cannot help it or to patiently pace yourself through because you never want it to end. Alanna Okun is a stellar and evocative writer. I found myself thinking of this book often when I was away from it and find this still after having finished. The writer's human experiences are so relatable and her spins on them so unique that my I found my perspective shifting throughout my normal day to day goings-on. A gem of a book. Looking forward to her next one.

I'm in no way a "crafter," but reading Alanna's essays made me call my mom and ask her to teach me how to knit, so that's a start. This book is absolutely wonderful (made my commute that much better). It's beautifully written, witty, and all those precious, emotional moments make you realize life is like a sweater: You cast on, knit, and bind off. Sometimes you end up with the perfect sweater and sometimes you don't. As long as you learn from your mistakes you can try again.

Too much discussion of mental health issues... too much self mutilation... profanity too strong, but able to ignore until page 81. Question to the author: would you have dared to state that expression using a certain other historical figure's name? Didn't you realize it would be a bit over the top? Threw the book out with the kitty litter.

As I was reading this book, I kept thinking, "Oh wow she gets it." As a crafter, a millennial, and a person with anxiety I related enthusiastically. The essays are easy to read and remind me of crafting itself: relaxing, easy, thought-provoking. My curse is the Curse of the Boyfriend Blanket- but same idea :) Wonderful read and would make a great gift for the crafter in your life always giving you beautiful handmade gifts!

Truly enjoyed this book of essays. I'm not a "crafter" by any means, but the writing is tremendous, and the content is witty, thoughtful, and rich with universal emotions. I ended up reading much faster than I had intended!

Alanna's book is a delight! Before I had finished the first chapter, I knew I would be passing my copy around to all my girlfriends. The way she writes about all of life's ups and downs, including loss, anxiety, and creative outlets is so relatable. It was a quick read, but one I'm sure I'll return to again and again. The cliche review applies here: I laughed, I cried... and it made this lapsed knitter want to pick up some needles again.

I've read many knitting memoirs, but this was by far my favorite. The author really captured the nuances behind crafting for oneself and for others. Her essays about her family were probably my favorite. Those resonated especially. Overall, I found this book to be soothing, witty, thought-provoking, and catalyzing. (Seriously! I started so many projects and finished at least half of them.) I highly recommend.

A truly wonderful book. Alanna Okun is an intelligent and empathetic writer, full of heart and humor. She will remind you of what it means to create. Buy this book! It will remind you to slow your thoughts, look kindly at others, and see the beauty in your life. Can you really ask for more?
