(Kindle version) Lao-Tsu has been a regular companion of mine for 40 + years. It's always interesting to find new translations, although this far for me nothing has beaten the Swedish translation by Henriksson&Hwang ( only in Swedish, though).I think I've read most of the English translations, my favourite is the Lau translation published by Penguin. This translation by Stenudd is very much in quality and sharpness in par with my Swedish favourite.I rate this translation as absolutely brilliant, and definitely a must if you are a fan.The book is both chapters and commentaries.Commentaries can be very useful for someone who is not so familiar with the text, or wants a reflection on the chapters. For me as a frequent reader, I prefer to skip them(I know best anyway, don't I...;-)?)The text in this translation is so pregnant and sharp, that I just don't want to read about it, the joy of the text stands for itself.

His commentary is thorough but I disagree with some of his interpretations. I prefer Stephen Mitchell ' translation by far. I've heard Thomas Cleary ' translation is the best.

The author's explantions are very well written of Lao Tzu stories.

Good explanation of Tao.

Excellent...still reading

Very well written for such an intense subject.

The 2071st translation is remarkably different!. The 2074th translation stands out as time well spent! The literary rendition of what was previously pure smut is great.

Great book if you want to compare the original Chinese scriptures with the English translations.

I was surprised at how much I enjoy this book. I downloaded it from Amazon eons ago and never even thought twice about it. However I play a game with my self on my kindle when picking a new book. I look away while I scroll up and down the book choices. Then I stop and I pick a book from what is on screen.I found parts of it quite funny. However looking back, I wonder if they were funny on purpose or I am seeing it wrong. Some bits were quite brilliant. Some bits were a bit sexist. I think our narrator Mr. Bedford is a big jerk and there is no way Star Trek Academy would let him in the door. Hell there is probably a big section in there first contact manual's about how not to do something labeled Mr. Bedford. It was a very interesting science fiction novel. I don't understand why it is not better known. I think the world building was wonderful. I know that the moon is not really that way but it is science fiction. Our moon is a dead thing but maybe there is another world out there with a moon such as this book's one. I like the descriptions of the aliens. Backtracking I know but the world building is very good. There is lots of layers, lots of details.Recap. Very good science fiction but dated. Don't let you stop you from reading this book. Mr. Bedford in my opinion is a jerk. Wells made me want this moon.

In The First Men in the Moon, by H.G. Wells, a scientist named Cavor develops a substance named cavorite, which shields the force of gravity. He and a businessman friend, Bedford, construct a spherical structure using cavorite and travel to the Moon. They discover a Moon that has enough oxygen in its atmosphere for humans to breathe and a reduced gravity that enables them to travel quickly by taking extremely long jumps. They also discover an active biosphere with rapidly growing plants, and intelligent human-insect creatures called Selenites. The Selenites live inside the Moon, not on its surface. Cavor and Bedford are taken captive by the Selenites, but Bedford escapes from captivity and manages to fly the sphere back to Earth along with a quantity of gold that makes him a wealthy man. He tried to rescue Cavor before he left the moon, but could not find him. Instead he found a note from Cavor and some blood that made him believe Cavor was dead. However, it turns out that Cavor was not dead, and he eventually sends a series of radio messages to Earth, which are very descriptive of the Selenite society and life on the Moon. This is a classic work of science fiction and Wells includes very creative descriptions of the vessel that carries Cavor and Bedford to the Moon and brings Bedford back to Earth. He also provides detailed descriptions of the Moon and its environment. Wells created a very interesting habitat and society on the moon, which is remarkable for a book published in 1901. The last twenty-five percent of the book, consisting primarily of Cavor's messages describing the moon and the Selenite physiology and society, was the most interesting part of the book for me. I would probably categorize this book as a fantasy because today's scientific knowledge of the Moon negates most of Wells' descriptions. However, it still conveys his amazing creativity and I'm glad I finally read it.

My first introduction to "Alien Voices" was the live showing of The Lost World. They had taken a forgotten art; Radio, and made it come to vivid life. Just their theme gets you in the mood with the gorgeous voice of John De Lancie saying "Alien Voices," lets you know you're in for something special. If you've read any of my other reviews, you know I love audio books. They pass the time when driving, help me chill during traffic, and really make me enjoy the walk with the dog! :)I bought this particular book for my mother when she had glaucoma surgery and knew she'd be entertained. Being in her 80's, she said it was like listening to an "old time radio show," having had the pleasure of hearing some of those (thanks to my parents), I totally agree. This particular book; "First Men in the Moon," is brilliant (and also has a guest "voice" of William Shatner). It's hard to imagine that H G Wells was so incredibly far ahead of his time. His stories (even though out-dated as far as actual facts for our modern minds) still envelopes you and takes you away to the wonderful worlds he creates."Alien Voices" has brought these brilliant stories to new life and hopefully are introducing them to new audiences who would leave the paperback on the shelf because it's just "some old book." Thank YOU John De Lancie and Leonard Nimoy for bringing these wonderful books to life. I only wish they were more affordable! :)Take my advice, try ANYTHING "Alien Voices," you'll be as hooked as I am.

H.G. Well's "The First Men in the Moon" (published in 1901, so it's long out of copyright and there are free editions on the web) is a Very Good (4 stars out of 5) piece of classic Science Fiction. It's nicely written with good descriptions and good characters (though the main character is a wee bit of a jerk). The one thing that I wish were different is the "addendum" that continues the book after what we would normally consider the end. This last 20% of the book has a different tone from the earlier 80%. Whereas the first part of the book is more of an adventure type of book, the last bit is where Wells puts in a lot of his socioeconomic concepts. It definitely changes the pace of the book. But, still, it's well worth reading.

I've not been trained to be a coach and I've not studied too much on being a coach, however these days leaders need to be coaches which is why I picked up this book whilst browsing on Amazon.Having read it I guess its pretty obvious, but being a consultant I also guess thats why I didn't see the obvious!I'm always trying to solve the problem, thats what consultant do. I guess its coaching I'm looking at the wrong problem, the problem or rather the challenge to overcome is the person, who in turn has the problem to solve.Anyway a great read and wants me want to learn even more about coaching.

A good concise ebook that provides much clarification on what it means to coach the person and not the problem. It is especially helpful if you are trying to help your clients move from simply solving problems to transforming their lives. As Chad Hall states: “When you coach at this level you are sensitive to the fact that sometimes the goal of coaching isn’t just to solve a problem but to help the client grow, develop, and even transform.” This idea of transformational coaching is especially relevant for those involved in faith coaching. In that regard I also recommend Chad’s book Faith Coaching: A Conversational Approach to Helping Others Move Forward in Faith as a further exploration of this topic.

“Coach the Person Not the Problem” covers the basics. But more often than not, you need the basics to be explained by someone with an external perspective. That's what the coaching is all about, isn't it?Before reading "Coach the Person..." I didn't have this clear distinction between a few different approaches to coaching. I used and mingled them all, depending on the situation and on the client's initiative.Basic or not, I will now use Chad's teachings in my coaching practice. I'm all about empowering my clients and coaching the person, not a problem, is the fastest way to achieve this objective.

I've been coaching for a few years and can still get into problem solving mode without realizing it. This short book shed light on a few things that have always been a bit fuzzy for me and gave me a bit of a mental model so I can be more aware of when I'm problem solving, coaching the client to solve their own problems, or coaching the client to use the problem as a mirror to make some sort of internal shift or learn something about themselves.I've learned how to coach from some pretty amazing teachers but it's definitely helpful to hear some different perspectives on things I've learned during my initial training. I'll look for other books by Chad Hall because I like how he simplifies and explains things in a very down to earth way. Some coaching literature can be painfully abstract. This book wasn't.

Great read. I chose this rating because it taught me some things I didn't know as far as coaching the person and not the emotions. Emotions is a result of what lies deep within.Nothing I didn't like about the book. It was short and sweet. Hopefully other beginners would see that the goal is to transform the client. Knowing when a client need coaching vs being counseled was something I heard before but it was good to see it again.

This is a short book which is some of it's merit. I agree with the premise, that as a coach you need to move past providing solutions. You also need to not always try to transform your clients. If you want to put this into practice though, you likely need more information than is provided in the book.

Coach the Person Not the Problem is a great resource to help coaches maximize discovery for their clients. Full of valuable insight and tools to put into practice immediately focusing on the client as the problem solver and not the coach. Throughout the book the coach is being equipped to leave the gathering information stage behind, engage creativity, and understand the "data role" of emotions in a client/coach relationship, coaching the person/client so they find the missing piece to their puzzle for their transformation. A go to resource for any coach looking to finesse their coaching skills taking them to a higher level of coaching for the ultimate end result of transformation for their client! Loved it!

A great, short book dealing with a common issue in coaching. Too often coaches want to focus on the problem the client presents instead of the person the client is. This book will help instruct newer coaches and remind veteran coaches about coaching the person. The book includes specific examples of what it looks like to coach the problem vs. what it looks like to coach the person. This is a wonderful resource.

Review

“One of the best novels in the whole series. The Gears have consistently captured early Native American life with precision, detail, and narrative excitement, but in People of the Moon they reveal their skills to even sharper effect.” ―Booklist on People of the Moon“A lively tale of warring clans. . . . Should leave readers hungry for more entries in the series.” ―Kirkus Reviews on People of the Moon

I loved the Prol\ogue about the past & now as we see in the present, that there have been several global warmings. This story depicts the process of archaeologists figuring out how a certain pattern of skeletons strewn along an area which had no water could have gotten there. This story continues 1000 years after Wolf Dreamer led his people through the hole in the ice and Silvertip receives a message from Wolf Dreamer. Almost no one believes the boy dreamer when he tells of his vision that they need to leave for they are in danger. In an opposing tribe Ti-bush is receiving a similar vision. Nashat practices a form of "cleansing" killing anyone who did not go along with his plan to go back under the ice. In Silvertip's tribe they plan to go South. There is no killing to those who do not want to go along. The book follows Silvertip's group and we can assume that the villian, Nashat's group is wiped out.© 2016 Microsoft Terms Privacy & cookies Developers English (United States)

I keep coming back to the Gear Gear stories because they're well told, share some pre-history, and do a really good job of giving the reader insight into what life might have been like for a different group of people at a different time. This one didn't disappoint in that respect, and I enjoyed it. The one knock I have on this series is that they don't make it easy to follow the chronological order of history, which is how I prefer to read them.

5 Stars the Gears never fall to write a great read. It is so very well recearched and their characters are clear cut and endearing. This book is full of excitment and the true to the period day to day struggles to survive. The villian is very brutal and hateful and the hero is couragious and self sacrificing. The characters are well developed and while the avid Gear fan may see similarities in character make up from their past works is no different than watching a movie using a favorite actor. It is a really a good book . I would recommend it as well as any of the many other books they have written.

I heartily recommend these books subject to the following caveats.Gear, man and wife, like J. K. Rowling, have succeeded admirably in creating an alternate universe and inhabiting it with very complex and interesting people. Unlike Rowling the Gears represent their literary universe as not only reasonable but perhaps a likely representation of life as it existed on the North American continent in ages past. In large, especially in details of culture, reconstruction of social relations, interpretation of climatic and geologic effects, etc. they have done a fine job. In a couple of areas they overstep reasonable limits but always maintain their narrative excellence. In the Gears' cosmology, men and spirits inhabit the universe and there is significant inter-penetration between the two. Rowling treats magic as fantasy. The Gears treat it as a fact of life. If the story lines had confined themselves to how the ancient Native Americans thought in terms of spiritual beings, how they attributed natural phenomena to their moods and actions, and how they sought to placate or enlist them, there would be no room for criticism. No one doubts the spiritualism of the ancient tribes. The problem, at least for me, was that these works do not stop there. In these stories, the spirits live, show themselves and interact with, enlist and use, the characters in the story. They are not portrayed as fantasy, i.e. Lord of the Rings, but as possible representations of actual historical events.Further, the characters and tribes of this book are essentially modern in their humanity. That is not to say that ancient peoples were sub-human or that they did not inherently face life with the same emotions, the same wonder, the same fear, etc. as we. However, it is one thing to be inherently human in potential, and another to have that potential realized. In these books the people converse in abstract terms and at deep levels with a bountiful and complete vocabulary at their disposal. It is difficult to believe that an ancient pre-literary, pre-historic people could have a conversation of such complexity and subtlety as do the characters in this story.Still the books grab the reader's attention and the plot line compels interest. We enter into a world where the god Raven Hunter is in competition with his brother Wolf Dreamer and the sphere of their conflict is the circumstance and life of the people. Of the two books I have read, each is built on this central theme and each works out its progress under a sense of deterministic ultimacy. The gods will have their way though men and women play their parts. Good requires evil to be in balance. Torture has its place and its necessity though not to be considered as a positive good. It is simply the way things are.All this being said, these stories are well worth reading. The detail and representation of ancient cultures and artifacts are always delighting the reader and the story line... well, .... it's the stuff of legends.

I was assigned this book for a class and was kind of dreading reading it. However, I’m giving it five stars because I was shocked at how much I enjoyed it!

This one is a little slow in the beginning, but it gets better as one gets more into t h e story. I've read almost all the books in this series. People of the Nightland is a good story as well as educational. Every time I read these books I learn more and understand better what it's trying to say. Keep up the good work!

This book of the NAFP series does not disappoint! As usual the Gears develop the characters' depth and ground it in real archeological and anthropological history and knowledge. It has a way of taking the reader right there.
