This is a very limited point of view review. I gave this book as a gift twice. Both times the receiver is engaged in it and loves it. Both recipients are native to the Philippines so the book brought back memories for them. They do visit the country regularly and was still in awe of the book. One recipient's home is located in the same location as the picture on the back cover. I watched both recipients reminiscence with their loves ones, and share with their children and grandchildren. Neither had anything negative to say about the book and as far as I am concerned they are the experts as I am not even Filipino. From my observation it was engaging, colorful and a real accurate depiction of the Philippines.

I was hoping to learn more about the Philippines and was really looking forward to seeing a map of the islands. No such luck. Pretty pictures but you will not be able to pinpoint any of the locations within the book.

Awesome book. Bought for my grandfather who spent time in the Philippines and misses it. He had me show him each page when I brought it to him. He took in every detail and showed me things going on in the background and stories from when he was there. He loved it and so did I.

Bought this for my Daughter-in-law who is home sick for the Phillipines. Made her smile. Beautiful place, beautiful pictures.

I like this book. It presents the beautiful and historical places of the Philippines. Being written by a Filipino, it depicts the country with a genuine feeling of pride and love.

a small "coffeetable" book to help establish ethnic identity and pride in grandchildren - but also information and glorious photos for all viewing it.

My parents grew up in the Philippines and loved looking at these images. Took them back to their childhood. Recommended.

Prior to joining Phillips Academy, Maria taught computer science at Boston University. Maria is the author of the C++ version of Be Prepared (Skylight Publishing, 1999) and co-author (with Gary Litvin) of the bestselling C++ for You++ (Skylight Publishing, 1998) and the Java Methods series. The latest edition is called Java Methods: Object-Oriented Programming and Data Structures, second AP edition (Skylight Publishing, 2011), and it is one of the leading high school textbooks for AP CS courses. As the author has indicated, this book is best used as an accompaniment to the actual APCS course in school. I had hoped that this book would give my son a jumpstart over the summer before he begins the actual course in the Fall. It contains good information with plenty of sample coding. However, it does reference programming terms (e.g., OOP, compiler, boolean) that a beginner would not necessarily grasp easily if used as a self-study guide. Given my own programming background, I am able to elaborate on key concepts as needed to help develop his comprehension. I can see why the previous version of this book received high marks from tutors and teachers. Unless you have some programming background, I would not recommend this book as a self-study guide.

My school's computer science program was a bit lackluster. Most people in the class goofed off and there was no formal instruction. Accordingly, with about a month until the AP, I started using this book to fill in the gaps of what I self taught myself. I got a 5 on the AP, so it prepared me rather well considering it was my main study material. It covered all the material and I did not see anything unexpected.

This is a good review book for last-minute review. Just reading the solutions doesn't help as much as this book could use more problem sets (that are more like the actual questions tested). This book also excludes some topics that are very important. A line warns you that there's an increased focus on algorithms "once again" but based on the 2015 AP, you absolutely need to be proficient in algorithms to succeed. That's not to say it was not helpful. It has pretty good tips. I would recommend using this book along with Barron's AP CSA. If you want to use just one book, go with Barron's.

Maira Litvin did a great job working on this book. The explanations are down to earth and the review questions are decent. I would recommend adding in some higher rigor questions to match that of the AP exam, but this book does a great job at the basics and intermediate level.
