This was the first volume in this well done middle grade fantasy graphic novel series. The illustration is unique and beautiful and the story is engaging. I really enjoyed it and would recommend to those who enjoy beautiful and deliberate fantasy graphic novel.sThe story is about a young pig (named Pig) who keeps the windmills running on the border of Sunrise Valley to push back a deadly black fog. When Pig’s dad ventures into the fog and dies, Pig is left on his own to protect the town. However Pig is very misunderstood at school and only his friend Fox makes things better. When Pig realizes the pattern of the black fog is changing: Pig, Fox, and Hippo end up on an accidental adventure.I loved the soft and beautiful illustration throughout the story; it’s easy to follow and fun to look at. The story was imaginative and well done as well. I think my only complaint would be that things move a bit slow. My 11 year old son wasn’t a huge fan of this graphic novel; he said it was too creepy and moved to slow.Overall this was a beautiful and magical story set in a fantasy world of talking animals and deadly black fog. This is just the beginning of the story but I enjoyed it. My 11 year old was not a fan, so this may be something adults enjoy more than kids.
The Dam Keepe Grphic Novel is a beautifully and delicately drawn and painted book. We are an animation instructors at a community college and parents of two little boys. As I was reading this book out loud to my kids my boys seem to pay a full attention with lots of different faces they make including the face wirh full of joy. Artistically speaking, a beautiful and poetic rendering approach with a looseness in the (digital) brush strokes, the book takes the viewers to a charming brave and trust-worthy world that the characters show through the breathtaking journey. I highly recommend this book to anyone that wants to study art and filmmaking composition and color as well as to parenets who have children. Can't wait for further books by/from Tonko House.
I was a fan of the original short film this book is a sequel to. The change in medium did nothing to lose the magic of the original. The beautiful artwork brings the fantastical story and characters to life. The only issue I have is that pages 93-108 are printed twice. I don't know if this just my copy or an issue with all copies. However, this wasn't enough of an issue to lower the rating. I highly recommend this and can't wait for the next book!
Robert Kondo, Dice Tsutsumi and all of Tonko House never cease to inspire me. I happened to watch The Dam Keeper short when it was released on Amazon, and ended up taking a course from them on Schoolism.com a few months later. These guys are so skilled and feel so genuine; they are artists who want to create beautiful works and compelling stories. That is just what you'll find in this first book.Physical:The book quality itself surprised me: It's hard cover with a lovely, textured book cover, quality pages that look and feel great, and it's bigger in size than I thought it would be.Artwork:The page layouts are dynamic, and the book is easy to read/follow overall. The artwork is the signature quality of the Tonko House we know and love from the short film, with added expressive qualities that come with the comic format.Overall:I recommend watching The Dam Keeper short film before reading this, as I feel it will make the experience far better, and might save some confusion? I throughly enjoyed getting to know Fox and Pig better, and being introduced to Hippo and other characters; I also can't wait to get more of a glimpse into Pig's backstory.I'm so happy that Robert and Dice have given us the opportunity to fall in love with their characters all over again! Thank you and I can't wait to read more!!!
Absolutely stunning book! Every frame was painted delicately and you just can't help enjoying every beautiful lighting in every shots. It's magical, and it looks so real that you can almost feel the heat, the coldness, or the strong wind in their painting. With strong story telling, Dice and Robert created a believable world for readers to have adventure with Pig, Fox, and Hippo. It's not only visually appealing to kids, but as an adult I enjoy the story and art very very much. If you already watch The Dam Keeper animated short, this book carries the quality of that beautiful film. Moreover, the story continues and becoming more intense throughout the journey.I highly recommend this graphic novel to those people who love stories, art, and to those who purely love beautiful things. I can't wait to know more about the story and continue my adventure with those lovable characters!
As an artist myself, this book is a masterpiece. Not to mention the price. It’s worth every single penny!The story is as heart-warming feeling as the original the Dam Keeper short film. I love that Tonko House really nailed the artistic and yet married with such charm looking art pieces. Looking through the book, panel by panel I can feel the love and effort they put in this book.Personally, I think the book fits all kind of audience from kids to adult. The style is totally family-friendly yet filled with such emotions, so adults can totally connect just fine.In short, either you want to own this book to just looking at hundreds of beautiful paintings, or you want to read such a wonderful story they put together, you won’t be disappointed because this book has it all, and beyond.I can’t wait to have more of the Dam Keeper world!
