I LOVE visiting New Mexico, probably more than anywhere else I have traveled to. It is a place of deep antiquity, expansive land and skies, many national parks and native american pueblos in an easygoing and friendly culture, so different from the other neighboring (read: red) states. I shopped for a couple of travel books so that my son and I would have some choices about where we wanted to go each day. Fodor's Santa Fe was downloaded on my Kindle App in full color on my Android tablet. Unfortunately, when it came to being useful it just didn't cut it. I found myself flipping the digital pages and skipping around looking for good detailed descriptions and instead found a wealth of the iconic Santa Fe images, many of which captured the unusual light and typical imagery of the area, but gave no real information about how to find the soul of the region once physically there. In my travel bags were the Frommer's and Lonely Planet guides, and my personal go-to preference was for the latter, which was laid out to be easier to find areas quickly and to make snap destination planning decisions (esp. needed to capture the dusk and fading sunlight), rather than comprehensive like the former Frommer's guide. The Fodor's guide feels more like the kind of coffee table book you buy at the airport bookstore for your aging aunt as a gift for watching your dog while you were gone, saying: "I bought this for you because you really must go there and see it for yourself", both of you knowing that neither will ever happen.

I ordered this guide because I was planning to be in the area and I thought I might pop over to Taos for a couple of days. But after perusing this guide for an hour I knew that I could not just spend a couple of days. I'd be in the area again next year and would plan a long trip. Taos/Santa Fe/Albuquerque is not an area to zip through. This looks like a place to stay a while and savor.Although I have some reservations, on the whole I think this guide should be quite useful. I got several ideas for my trip while looking at it. For example, when I saw that the area is accessible by Amtrack, I began to entertain the possibility of taking the train at least one way. (Flying is not a lot of fun these days.) There is also a New Mexican rail line from Santa Fe to Albuquerque. When I saw that one can rent bicycles in some locations, I have determined to include at least one day of cycling, rather than hiking a nature trail! What I like about this guide are the suggested day trips (which can save a lot of planning time), the museum listings (complete with prices, hours and web addresses), and the suggestions for activities.From my previous experience with Fodor's guides, I think they tend to cater to well-heeled couples who prefer the beaten track. I'm very suspicious of the recommendations for dining and lodging, as in the travel industry lots of perks are given to travel writers that are not given to the general public. Sometimes the recommendations border on advertising. What's missing are those places that might appeal to people other than the retired couple with unlimited funds. When I travel I want to eat where the locals eat. I want to find that family-run, working-class restaurant that makes the best Mexican food in town, and the best place to get breakfast while absorbing the local color. I don't see that in this guide.As usual, Fodor's ignores the literary traveler. D.H. Lawrence lived in Taos for two years and was visited by Aldous Huxley while he was there, but I could find no mention of either one of them in this guide. I'd like to know if there's anything left of where he lived. In his Memoirs, Tennessee Williams mentions visits to Taos, which he called "the lesbian capital of the world." I'd like to know more about that, too. I wish they had included a section on the writers who had lived and worked in the area.That said, the guide is a convenient size for traveling and, supplemented by some Internet searches, could be extremely useful. It's not a bad place at all to start.

Worth’s Income Tax Guide For Ministers: 2012 Edition was written by Beverly J. Worth in 2011. Mrs. Worth is a graduate of Calvary Bible College and is the founder and owner of Worth Financial Service. She is an Enrolled Agent and Certified Tax Practitioner; she first authored this publication 1973 and has revised it every year since then. From pave v. in the forward, Mrs. Worth’s declared goals are, “…to teach ministers how to keep their taxes to a minimum and to maximize their earning power.” There are several testimonials on the back cover as well as on page 136 from ministers, lawyers and tax practitioners; as well as people who have attended one or more of Mrs. Worth’s seminars; who all declare that she is a recognized authority on taxes and that she greatly helped them with her seminars and tax publications. As an income tax guide, Mrs. Worth organized the book similar to a manual and many of the 144 pages show the reader what the tax forms look like. The author puts these facsimiles of the forms to good use, explaining to the reader how to properly complete these IRS forms. This is a very helpful tool. The numerous references to the various tax codes and tax laws are very helpful as well. Mrs. Worth states in the forward that the purpose for adding these references was to give the reader confidence and this goal is achieved satisfactorily. Another strength of Worth’s Income Tax Guide for Minister’s is that it is laid out in a fashion that attracts the reader’s (presumably those involved in vocational ministry) attention. The very first chapter involves fringe benefits, certainly something even the most pious Christian would be curious about. The author then explains housing allowances in chapter two, and professional expenses in chapter three. All of these areas are difficult to understand, and Mrs. Worth does a remarkable job explaining why minister’s must do taxes different and how the government taxes ministers differently, but explains it in a way that is non-threatening and easy to understand, emphasizing the benefits as opposed to any disadvantages. In chapter four the author tackles the mystery of social security for religious workers. In this chapter she diligently explains the computation of social security base, as well as social security exemption and the “new belief” opportunity. The author includes a helpful discussion of form 2555 and form 2555-EZ and suggests that the reader study IRS publication 54, as it contains more in-depth information for overseas missionaries. Chapters six and seven cover completed payroll reports and completed income tax returns. The majority of chapter seven is comprised of sample income tax returns, which is very helpful to reader, who may use these samples as a guide when filling out their respective returns. Every type of return that a minister may file is listed and these visual aids are very helpful. The careful reader will gain a great understanding of tax laws and policies for ministers after a careful study of this book. The most significant feature of Worth’s tax guide is the comprehensive interaction with tax codes and laws as they pertain to the vocational minister. The support from the quotations of applicable tax laws and the repeated references to the IRS manuals and forms were a great asset to the book. This demonstrates that the author knew what she was talking about and the careful reader could look up the references directly on the Internal Revenue Service website, where IRS publications are made available. Another significant feature is the positive attitude the author has towards the IRS, and she stresses and attitude of cooperation on page 97. It is easy to look at the government in general and the IRS in particular with an attitude of mistrust and antagonism. The positive light Mrs. Worth sheds on the revenue branch of the U.S. government was refreshing. This reader will recommend this book to any minister who has questions about taxes and retirement for those in vocational ministry. It will also be recommended to those who have questions as far as investing for retirement and who are uncertain about the different investment options related to ministers retirement. The book is a wide-ranging survey of how taxes work for those in ministry and is valuable to anyone who would like a better understanding of this subject.

I have used B.J. Worth's tax guide ever since it was a small 1/2 page booklet and now has grown into a major volume. I have run into "expert" tax service companies who know nothing about clergy and minister's taxes and this book gives them a full education on the special situations of clergy as well as the extra deductions available. This book had all the promise of being interesting and revealing - New Guinea and Papua New Guinea and a white man's initiation into local culture. However, it went awry and somehow got lost in the jungle. I feel like the author did not really let us in on what he actually felt. The author wanted to respect the secrecy of his experience, but still misses sharing with us some simple things. He is given crocodile scales, but never tells us exactly where, how many, how they felt to the touch (when he was eventually allowed to touch them) and whether he was proud or not of his scales in the years following. I was also confused as to what the author expected from his experience. He keeps indicating that he wants a spiritual experience, but feels let down when he does not encounter real "magic". On the whole, I felt disappointed when I reached the end of the book, because I could not clearly tell what the author got out of his adventure.

I must say that I would be very interested in how the author views this experience from his perspective in 2011. Although he is not the only explorer to go through tribal initiation rituals, the ritual of scarfication he submitted to seems quite extreme for even the best of them! Returning to England with a raised pattern on his skin resembling that of a crocodile must have shocked more than a few people!Having read several of his books, I admire his approach to adventure, relying on his ability to enlist the aid of people he meets along the way. His comfort zone is very large, and his openness no doubt appeals to the indigenous populations. He does not present himself as a larger-than-life character, nor does he adopt a macho facade. He is a human among other humans, which is precisely why I enjoy traveling with him.

With little preparation and information, the author flies into West Papua where he first treks from mission to mission in 10 days among the Yali and Kim Yal people of the eastern highlands.Then he makes a more adventurous trek in the southern foothils to visit the remote Obini people. However with lack of understanding of their culture and no means to communicate with them he gets chased away after 4 days.Disappointed, he gives up on West Papua and flies back to more civilized Papua New Guinea, where he manages to take part in a traditional initiation ceremony along the Sepik River.

A friend, a master gardener who lives in Alaska recommend I purchase this book even though I live nowhere near Alaska. I'm so glad she had me get it! The book is full of valuable concepts that can be applied anywhere.

Lots of pictures of what others have done, but I bought it mainly for the database of plants that will grow in Alaska. Working on my gardens in Anchorage and always looking for new ideas
