I briefly hesitated to buy this book only because I read Rory's wonderful blog closely over the last year and a half and didn't know if the material would be much different. However, I'm glad I purchased the book. I needed something positive and inspirational, and it is positive and inspirational--and the material IS different from the blog. He intentionally doesn't rehash material that he's shared previously on the blog, which I appreciate because I enjoyed reading about his younger years, not just because I wanted different material as a consumer. I think the book could have been even more thoroughly developed regarding his later childhood years (the ones he can remember the most) and mid-adulthood, and the end of the book is a bit abrupt, even though it concludes nicely. I assume that it is a bit abrupt not only because the last few years of his life are well-documented on the blog but also because he wants to respect his wife's privacy and dignity. As a reader, I understand both reasons. But, I still would have enjoyed reading more about his pre-Joey adulthood, as it would have been interesting and would have filled out the book a little more. I do enjoy a robust memoir.Rory's writing style is easy and pleasant, and it reads like he didn't fight the page or the words much in trying to tell his story clearly, which is enjoyable and which speaks of a natural storyteller and writer. I will likely read it again soon because his descriptions of his inner world when he was fighting to be a better man and to fulfill his life's purpose spoke to my current mindset. I need it, and I appreciate it.

I, too, followed Joey and Rory's story for the year prior to Joey's passing. I have been a follower of Bill & Gloria Gaither who reside in the same town where Joey grew up. So it was with great anticipation that I traveled to Myrtle Beach last fall for a Gaither even where Rory Feek was the keynote speaker. He did not speak a lot about Joey, but he told about his boyhood days and how difficult life was for his mom. It was a true pleasure to meet Rory and Hopie at their product booth. Indy was there too. She was quite a crowd pleaser.You should know that the audible version of this book was recorded by Rory. He considers that opportunity a special gift for him.This book is wonderful. It's a must read for anyone who was a fan of Joey+Rory plus it's also a testimony to God's hand at work in our lives.You won't be sorry if you read this wonderful, teary story.

My wife is the one who introduced me to the Rory+Joey story, keeping me updated on the couple's journey through marriage, stardom, parenthood, cancer, and an untimely death. We watched DVDs, listened to CDs, and rode the emotional rollercoaster. All along, though, I had that sneaking male suspicion that Rory was just too calm, too perfect, that we weren't getting the whole story. In fact, I was even hesitant to read this book after my wife finished it, afraid that it would be too simple and sweet. I wanted something deeper and more raw.Thankfully, Rory does give us a deeper look into his past and his own journey. By doing so, he won me over, finding camaraderie with another man and husband who has made mistakes but is also committed to his wife, family, and God. Rory shares some of his own mistakes, doesn't make excuses, and shows grace and forgiveness for others in his life--such as his mother, his ex-wife (before Joey), and so on. I would've loved to hear more about his daughters, since they've clearly had a lot to deal with in this whole process too, but that's their own story to tell if and when they choose.This Life I Live is an extraordinary story, and this couple's example is one that many have been encouraged and challenged by. I'm glad my wife brought me along for the ride, and Rory's honesty and candor only makes me more appreciative of God's working in our lives.

I happen to be an enormous fan of this beautiful Christian couple. Their story is filled with the feeling of love, not only for each other, but also for God and family. Rory writes from his heart about his difficult childhood and upbringing. He also voices doubt about his own faith, just as many Christians do. In meeting and marrying Joey, he was given a gift from God....someone to share and grow his faith- walk with . Joey's goodness shone from her face, her faith in God was so absolute. Rory learned to love himself and more importantly, God, because of Joey's complete love of God. I was devastated when I learned of her illness and realized the pain that both she and Rory would face. Read this book to learn about strength, love and faith....it is a touching and glorious story!

Having lost my husband of 45 years in September of 2016 I am still in the midst of my grieving process and am reading a lot more right now. I expected to find some similarities in our stories as my husband who was always healthy and active was diagnosed with Cancer went the chemo and radiation route and was terminal but just wanted a little more precious time. But I did not expect it to be such an easy inspiring comforting read. Thank you so much for writing this and sharing even more of your love and life experiences. I am changed after reading it and the references to a higher power in God and helping me be more able to appreciate that my love for my husband will always remain strong and that others understand you understand .Your masterful command of verse and your honest revelations of your life experiences are special and thought provoking and I enjoyed this book immensely. My granddaughters had no interest in technology, nor exhibited any tendency to want to learn anything about it or computers ... that is, until I read them this book. Actually, I did not finish reading it. They decided they wanted to read it out loud themselves (to each other). Something clicked. The then-8-year-old suddenly wanted to know it all. The then-11-year-old started Googling things about "code." What have I done!? (Oh, well. Maybe lit a fuse that will lead to a career? Although, the older one now talks about going into medicine.)This is a very cool book. I suggest you read it first for yourself, so that you can prepare to get the "voices" right when you do read it to your young ones. It took a couple or chapters or more before they got into it, but once they did, they did not want to stop. Then they wanted it read over and over.I wish there were more books about science and technology that was this direct, simple, straightforward, and made the subject approachable. I'm not able to pick out what needs to be said about complex subjects and then say them simply, so this writer has done a particularly admirable job.

This isn't a bad book. I'm just not sure who is the target audience. I am a former software engineer with a degree in Computer Science that now teaches Computer Programming to high school students that are mostly non-native speakers of English.This is a cute story for anyone that already understands CS concepts. I think it is a little too subtle for anyone else. The main character tangentially encounters many CS concepts and uses a few, but the story never really explains any of them in a particularly meaningful or memorable way. There is an appendix that offers better explanations, but they lose much of their effectiveness being separate from the story.

So I bought this on a lark and loved reading it. Okay, I'm a man in my forties reading a book for a middle schooler, maybe high school, but I thought they did a great job of explaining most of the concepts I studied getting my comp sci degree. Look forward to sharing it with my daughter when she is older.

I bought this book during another infamous evening of being physically exhausted, but mentally ready to write the program that everyone knows exists, should they take the time to concentrate, much like the novel in each of us.I started the book and felt that maybe I had chosen the wrong selection for the evening. But an hour later, when I kept recognizing concepts, names, and miscellaneous facts that remain in the deep recesses of the mind, I found myself enjoying this cute little "Alice in Wonderland" type book, thinking at the end it would take some of the fear of programming away from kids who are bombarded with terminology. This took common concepts, famous names and other important bits, making them fun for even this old gal that hasn't cared for children's stories. Read it out loud to a curious child sometime and see how many concepts you now think of in terms of lighthouses and mail daemons.

This is a fun kid's book about the mathematical underpinnings of computer science, very much in the style of The Phantom Tollbooth, featuring a lost girl named Lauren and a hapless chameleon named Xor. There are no computers here, but a lot of good word-play and some solid, if brief, lessons in things like logic, turtle geometry, binary decision trees, digital networking, round-robin load balancing (with round robins), cryptography, subroutines, recursion...There are notes in the back; I recommend reading each chapter's notes immediately after the chapter while the ideas -- and jokes -- are still fresh, but you could also take the author's advice and save the notes for last. (Or leave them for later, with a kid who just wants a fast-paced and light-hearted tale full of engaging critters, weird characters, and obscure puns.) Not quite everything is explained in the notes, either; the story stands well enough on it's own, but there's enough missing that a kid could come back to it a few years later and get more of the references.Highly recommended.

If you, like me, do programming on a regular basis but have found your progress impeded by the lack of a computer science background this book is a nice first step. Some computational concepts are introduced in a funny and approachable manner, not too much detail but just enough to be able to tackle more technical resources without giving up in 5 minutes. The story itself is engaging for a younger audience, and I believe the book is a good resource to wet their appetite about CS, especially if read with somebody already knowledgeable about the concepts.

I think this was a very great book. I read it to my 6-year-old daughter. It is cute, has some funny bits, and moves at a nice pace. The chapter on the Byzantine Process was pretty funny. My daughter enjoyed the story and it introduces some basic computer science ideas, without being too technical. Depending on the age of the child, you may have to re-read it for them to remember a lot of the ideas (but then I think it is a great idea to re-read books to children). Plus I love how the main character is a girl and she goes on an adventure.

Read this book in about 2 hours. It's very Alice-In-Wonderland feeling. I definitely reccomend it to anybody who feels afraid or intimidated by Big Computer Books.

what a huge help with interpretation. My kid attends a fine arts school and we're working on monologues for Auditions. It's so important to know what was really happening before and after the specific verse to really play it out. The sidebar interpretation helps so much with this aspect. Highly recommend to anyone studying Shakespeare

This is a Shakespearean Comedy of Manners from before the genre was even really a fully developed thing, featuring love affairs, a revenge plot, some humorous incompetence, a faked death, and much more. I'm not a big comedy fan, but this is certainly a good example of the genre at the time from which it came, and I actually quite enjoyed it. When it comes to the works of Shakespeare as a whole, I would say that this is a less memorable example, but definitely has some positives going for it as well. For one, it's far less well-known than many of his more famous works, so it doesn't feel familiar as you read it. The characters and plot also tend to grow on you, even as the language isn't quite so memorable, and the plotting and mistaken identities aspects are always good plot points, whether you're speaking of today or centuries ago. As to the edition itself, I found it to be greatly helpful in understanding the action in the play. It has a layout which places each page of the play opposite a page of notes, definitions, explanations, and other things needed to understand that page more thoroughly. While I didn't always need it, I was certainly glad to have it whenever I ran into a turn of language that was unfamiliar, and I definitely appreciated the scene-by-scene summaries. Really, if you want to or need to read Shakespeare, an edition such as this is really the way to go, especially until you get more accustomed to it.

Left and right format is great, better than parsing footnotes, but find another version. Whoever was hired to "translate" from Elizabethan English for these likely doesn't know the Virgin Queen from Elizabeth Bennet. The right page modern language translation usually adds nothing, in many cases is an exact copy, but in a significant number of instances completely misses the meaning of the words and/or line. I suspect that the publisher hired an English major from a minor college, paid them peanuts, and got what they paid for: a lazy, careless translation. In Modern English, "these suck".

The Arden (individual) Shakespeares are the most comprehensive texts available for public consumption. The introduction gives a history of the performance of the play (with photos), the sources used, describes differences between the versions (quarto vs folio), and so much more. My favorite part is that each page has explanations/translations for unfamiliar and archaic terms in the play (I.e. you don’t have to go to the back of the book for an explanation of what “zounds” means). That said, this isn’t my favorite play by Shakespeare, but that is not the book’s fault... I like measure for measure better.

it helps tremendously having notes and context side by aide to the text. there's also a lengthy introduction about the story, language and Bard himself.If you're a beginner you will still have to put a lot of effort in, and you will likely need other resources as well, but this is an excellent starting text

This is a comment about my (purchased) paperback copy of The New Cambridge Shakespeare's "Much Ado About Nothing." On the last page it says "Made in the U.S.A, Lexington, KY, 18 April 2018." The Amazon warehouse that usually ships my orders is in Lexington. Did this warehouse actually print this book to order (it arrived April 20), under permission from the Cambridge University Press? I wonder because the printing of the text does not appear to be of the highest quality, as if the press or the printer was low on ink. The pages are not numbered. The still images printed in the introduction are grainy, as if they have been blown up too large.If you are interested in this particular NCS edition, I don't recommend buying it here (at least not for the price I paid, $11.95). It simply has the look of a facsimile.

I'm the parent of a 12 year old girl, and we watched the Kenneth Branagh version of Much Ado, and since my daughter is particularly fond of the Korean form of Manga (called Manwah, I think), we got several Manga versions of Shakespeare's plays. They use Shakespeare's language (not all of it), and are a good "gateway" to reading the plays themselves. The visual style is dramatic and impassioned, which fits well with the emotions for teens. The images remind me of "story board" images used to plan the visual shots for a movie -- therefore, I would say that the images add to the intelligence and thought put into the reading of the play.

There are few films as joyous as Much Ado About Nothing. Much of this joy comes from the beautiful visual shooting of this film and the Italian Villa and estate where the entire story was shot on location. Follow the process with the director himself, by reading his book and you will enriched by the tender loving care that went into creating this masterpiece.
