"A powerful, searing recollection of the past, telling George Salton's story with a fierce integrity that is both descriptive and introspective. Unlike the psalmist, Salton walked through the valley in the presence-not the shadow-of death, and he feared evil. Rightfully so, for God was absent and there was no comfort. Yet, he lived to tell the tale and for this we must be forever grateful."-Michael Berenbaum, author of The World Must Know and former consultant to Steven Spielberg's Shoah Foundation Project

This is a powerful, extremely well written, first hand story of how one young Jewish boy of 14 year of age survives the worst that we have ever heard of coming out of the holocaust. We've all heard the stories, know the truths of the holocaust. That said, Mr. Salton gives us the most personal, excruciating personal details of what it was like to barely survive over four years of the very worst treatment anyone could experience at the hands of other human beings. I thank Mr. Salton for preserving his story for all of us in his exceptional book. His positive spirit, written in the last pages, is overwhelming.

This is the only book I have ever read through in one sitting. It was so captivating that I couldn't put it down. It took me an entire afternoon, evening and into the night until about 3am.The author has an amazing ability to make you feel like you are right there with him. His writing is a detailed personal narrative of his horrific experiences and unusually strong will to survive and maintain hope in the midst of pure hell. This is the most meaningful memoir I have ever read and it changed me. I often find myself thinking of some of the memories and concepts he described in the book. It has left a lasting mark on me and I highly recommend this book to everyone.

This book is worth reading even if you think you know what happened to the Jews in the concentration camps in Poland and in the slave labor camps in Germany. The book is written by someone whose teenage years and family were lost to the Nazi system of forced labor, sadism and murder. His account is harrowing. The amount of courage it took for the author and his family to dredge up these detailed memories - names of guards, names of prisoners, dates, cities, quotations - and the violence and humiliation he suffered - there is no doubt that he became a Mensch in spite of those who treated him as less than a dog.For people researching Shoah, this book documents survival from the Polish Jewish prisoner's point of view, starting from the moment Germany invaded Poland - during the "selection" process, in multiple forced labor camps, during forced marches and during the boxcar transports. It documents the reactions of non-Jewish citizens in Poland, Germany and France to the public humiliation and (rare) escape attempts of the prisoners. It documents the lies that were told in order to trick the prisoners into joining transports to Belzac, and how slowly rumors of the truth reached the surviving family members. It documents the progression of laws that harmed Jews. It documents a wide range of slave labor, torture and punishment - from first-hand experience and from what he witnessed happening to other prisoners. It documents the few moments when someone risked their own safety to provide compassion or a scrap of food or the transmission of a message.Warning: this book is highly experiential. You will not be able to put it down. You will have to put it down.It is probably not suitable for teenagers and young adults without mature adult discussion. Many thanks to the author and his family for making the story public.

This gut-wrenching account of relentless torture lasting through all the years of World War II is painful to read - I cant imagine how agonizing it must have been to write it. I can't even begin to imagine what a single day of this torture must feel like, let alone year after year of persecution. I lost count of how many camps this survivor was sent to. There must have been at least ten. I wouldn't have survived a week, so I can only marvel at those who live through the Nazi hell that Jews in Poland and elsewhere were put through. This is a very well written account. I just finished reading another that wasn't; a highly priced book in which the author, surprisingly a writer, wasn't really telling a story but just repeating thoughts. I've read so many memoirs and books on the Holocaust I almost feel I was there - but of course no one who wasn't can ever replicate the suffering even in imagination. The one thing that struck me about this book was how the persecution never let up for a moment. In the daytime it would be the SS guards with their truncheons and their spitting abuse and by night it would be the cold, the dying, the smells, the hunger, the sickness and the lice. Once again I find myself marveling at how very easily segments of the human race can convince themselves that their hatred is justified and their mind numbingly violent actions justified. And all in the name of religion? The Christians' own Jesus would never have condoned anything like the Holocaust. Yet, half the population of Europe had no problem killing the other half because they were Jews? I thought I was jaded with Holocaust reading but this memoir convinces me that I will never ever "get over" what happened or understand what makes this ugly human race tick.Ah yes, sometimes I have to force myself to remember there were many wonderful people, on all sides, during World War II as well. But my goodness was it a feast of cruelty in which violence was honed to a fine art, an industry, a passion.I am so very saddened by the author's unending love for his lost family and his friends. You can sense, in the way he describes them, that he's a person who is filled with love for people. I'm touched by his children and grandchildren, wanting to share , so many years later, his burden of traumatic memories.I'm very saddened. But glad that I read The 23rd Psalm.

I am a beginner / intermediate web developer and am reading much of this book for a web development class in early 2012. The fact that the professor is still using this book speaks to its quality and applicability, despite the fact that the edition we are using was written in 2006.This book covers a broad range of core web topics such as character sets, XML, HTML, Cascading Style Sheets, JavaScript, and DOM. It was helpful for me, since I had little or no knowledge of half of those technologies before reading this book. The book is more than a simple reference. One of its major strengths is that it also offers sound design advice throughout.Because of the age of the book, there are many references to idiosyncrasies of old browser versions and no mention of newer technologies (e.g. Microsoft Silverlight). However, it's coverage of other core topics were valuable enough for my teacher to still use it and for me to give it a four star rating. If O'Reilly updates this book, I expect the next version to be five stars.

This review refers to the third edition. This isn't an update to the second edition, it is a rewrite. I read the second edition before I read this one, and the 3rd edition is light years ahead. Completely new chapters on CSS and updated references to browsers as new as IE7.What I like most about this book is it will tell you how something is supposed to work, then tell you in which browsers it will and will not work. It's great to have some bleeding edge CSS 2.1 in your code, but if it doesn't work in IE6, do you really want it on your business site? This is not a learning tool (although I picked up quite a lot of tricks and tips). There are other books for this. If you have a good foundation with XHTML and CSS, this is the book to have next to the computer.

The new edition is comprehensive and concise to a degree I have not found in any other web design reference book. Since the first edition this book has grown considerably. This edition, for its concision, could still be described as a reference in a nutshell, but for its comprehensive cover of the most important material to a useful depth, it is more than that. If you are, as I am, often pressed for time while multi-tasking towards the completion of projects on tight schedules, and need the right information quickly, this book will become a treasured tool. This is my, and I recommend that it become your, reference of first resort.

the author knows the subject well, and she writes well. i found myself reading the book for hours, and learning new things in a nice and organized way. if just all books are like that...it is good for beginner and intermediate level. if you are already advanced or guru level, you may find that you know a good part of the material in the book already. but since this book talks about so many aspect of web technologies, unless you advanced in most areas, you probably still find it useful or good to have as a reference.

Worthy of the O'Reilly name, this was a good book that covered many interesting topics. It's contains some good information about web concepts that are of valuable use to programmers, like myself. However, it is not a book on "web programming", so don't expect it to contain any Java-specific information. If you are interested in learning how browsers work, (X)HTML concepts, CSS, a little Javascript, graphics, etc., this book will provide some invaluable information. Also, an excellent reference book.

I really liked this book. It was a great textbook for learning the basics on web design. It provided me some great insight and skills needed to get started.

This is an essential book for any web designer or hobbyist. Don't expect a reference book filled with tables and syntax lists, however. It's more of a learning book than a reference book. But it's still vital for quick look-ups of everything a web designer needs to know, from general style and standards guidelines to rarely used tage.I already had a previous edition of this book, but the 3rd Edition is an important update.

This is a strange book. While it is very detailed and good for a the new student in some areas, in others it assumes a level of knowledge beyond introductory level. JavaScript is the perfect example of this. I understand enough about the topic to know that it is complicated and somewhat difficult to understand/explain in written form. However, for an introductory book, this uses tons of terms it never defines and explains how to perform an operation without explaining the underlying concept. It's okay for getting the work done, but I never really felt like it explained to me what I was doing.

I love Hello Neighbor, and I'll say this: the game had a lot of "huh?" Moments, which I both liked and didn't like, but having the (as of writing this) four pieces that make up the story so far (2 books and 2 games) that flaw gets thrown out the window. The book is so fun to read and knows how to make your reader feel the suspense of Mr. Peterson sneaking up to you.If you need a holiday gift or even just feel like buying a book for you or a friend, you can't go wrong with this one.

My son is a fast reader and loves hello neighbor so he finished this book in 2 days at school. He was excited to learn more about the characters and looks forward to the next book. Great add to his library!

I did not realize the age for the book. Much more advanced than for the recipient.

This is the first novel my son has finished. He couldn’t put it down! He has to read for his HW but he’d keep reading past his 20 minutes!

Bought for a Xmas present and my son who doesn’t enjoy reading but after a day is almost finished and is ready for the nextIn the series!

Was well liked

I got this book and didn't regret it. It's full of mystery, and a good follow-up of the game hello neighbor. Plus, it's only 5$

My daughter loves the book. She enjoyed reading the book.

About the Author

Geneviève Castrée (1981-2016) was born in Québec. Swept away by comics, she wanted to be a cartoonist since the age of nine. Castrée felt the urge to publish her mini-comics early, and appeared in the Montréal underground scene while she was still a teenager. In addition to her books, Castrée had a number of exhibitions in Canada, the United States, Europe, Australia, and Japan. She spent her adult life in the Pacific Northwest with her husband and daughter, where she drew, made small sculptures out of porcelain, and played music under the name Ô PAON.

This book is incredibly beautiful and deeply personal. I lost my mother when I was 2 years old and I wish that I had a gift like this from her. It will leave you speechless. It would be helpful for the reader to know the story of Genevieve and her family, but the book can relate to love and loss between all mothers and children. Simply stunning.

I first learned about these unpublished drawings in Jayson Greene’s deeply moving profile on Phil Elvrum in Pitchfork following Genevieve’s death.Thank you to the family for sharing Genevieve’s last work with us. It’s a testament to their love and bond that both have created such beautiful art in the face of something so unimaginably cruel.I wish Phil Elvrum and their little pinecone a peaceful and happy life.

This book is so deeply moving. The work of an incredible artist who drew this book as a gift to her toddler as she struggled and eventually lost her battle with cancer. This book captures a moment in time so intensely. Artist Anders Nilsen, who is also one of my very favorites, helped complete the book. It is such a special book to hold in your hands.
