For over fifteen years I’ve worked in a male dominated industry and, as an introvert, I've struggled to find my voice in many situations. When I became a leader I was only equipped with compassion and a goal to be an advocate and that was my North Star. But even with good intentions, I struggled through many tough situations with my staff and made some ill-guided decisions that harmed relationships and people. I wish this book was available much earlier in my career to help me navigate bullying, harassment, and discrimination. In Healthy Workplace Culture Meredith provides practical insights and actionable tools, exposing the root cause of conflict and disarming it through comprehensive steps. Reading this book has sparked deep reflection and real moments of breakthrough for me, both personally and in my career and for my staff. I am empowered and I now feel equipped to help educate all those around me to empower themselves to set appropriate boundaries and build a healthier workplace culture together.'Ignoring discrimination and harassment does not make it go away any more than ignoring germs makes them go away. We have not been taught how to deal with cultural toxicity in the workplace.' We all need to learn and implement the four pillars of cultural wellness in our workplace.I am an Executive Producer and Director of Creative Operations

As a self-taught leader and business owner, it's often hard to find the right resources that speak to MY situations. As my business grows, learning to be an effective and genuine leader to my employees is much harder than the actual work I do! Meredith Holley's book, The Inclusive Leader's Guide to a Healthy Workplace Culture did two things for me immediately: 1) It gave me a sense of relief because she speaks to exactly what I need-clear, concise and relatable situations that I can easily layer over my own experiences. 2) It gave me tools to begin looking at my business with the goal of creating a stronger, healthier and more welcoming environment for my employees. Meredith Holley does a great job of making the information presentable. She breaks down the idea, provides examples of real life situations, and gives concrete tools to implement the idea. She manages to do this in a manner that makes space for personal reflection without shame. Several times while reading through her book I found myself evaluating myself and how I responded to past situations with employees. Each time I moved to negativity about my choice, the next sentence would be a reassuring nudge that moved me to a new and more useful thought process. This book gives me an opportunity to look at my role in my company's culture and to create a system of empowerment so I can decide what, when and how I want to make changes in my company. This is a quick and insightful read, and I know I will come back to it many times to make sure I'm creating the kind of working environment I am proud to be leading. Adrienne Black, Founder and Director, Heart to Hands Surrogacy

For much of my life, I worked in industries where women have been expected to tolerate harassment and discrimination, including working on fishing boats and in restaurants. We did not complain about harassment because we were expected to prove ourselves, and part of that was in tolerating behavior that was targeted at us as women. I became a therapist, doing play therapy anger management and batterer intervention, and then a certified life coach. Now, I help women, who are leaders in their businesses, resolve the self-loathing they feel around food and their weight, so that they can focus on their industry leadership. Sometimes, my clients, even though they have worked hard and gotten to the top of their field, believe it is not possible to find or create a work environment that is emotionally healthy or inclusive. This book challenges that idea and provides a framework for building an inclusive environment. Especially if you, as a woman leader, have wondered whether you’ve tolerated harassment or discrimination to get to where you are today, this book can help you shift that to create better expectations and a more efficient environment for people coming after you. Caryn Gillen

Meredith Holley is a Godsend! The opportunity to work with a Woman who is skilled as an Attorney; compassionate with harassment issues; understands business issues; educates through real life stories and her own personal experience with the emotional healing process; is a rarity! I have read her first book,CAREER defense 101 which I use to counsel, educate, and negotiate solutions with my clients. Her brilliance in expressing complex concepts with simple metaphors, has transformed hours of consulting with clients, to minutes by quoting her thoughts from her books, to my students and clients. For example: “her brain thought she was being attacked by a giant bear, when really she was just witnessing a tantrum”; “because for a man, being laughed at really is worse than death.”; “men often have sensitive shame triggers where woman have sensitive fear triggers. As my friend explained, many men may quickly associate laughter with shame and rejection and think death preferable to a life of shame.” In less than 3 paragraphs, her message helped with negotiations, in a situation with a hearing in court, on a TRO for criminal threat charges, to a settlement with two parties to seek relationship counseling! And NOW, with her new book THE INCLUSIVE LEADERS’S GUIDE TO HEALTHY WORKPLACE CULTURE she takes the bull by the horns, and launches a program for employers and employees to take charge of of the complex issues with harassment in the work place and beyond with a program to train, educate, and dedicate “soul”-tions to create change! I’m on-board to join her ARMY OF BUSINESS Leaders to bring change for all! Review

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLERA BLOOMBERG BEST BOOK OF 2016“Five Easy Theses sets out key issues of public policy easy to identify in concept but long unresolved in practice. Stone proposes sensible approaches to breaking the long-standing political deadlock. The specific measures to deal with budgetary balance, income inequality, public education, healthcare, and financial reform should provide a guide for constructive debate as we choose our next president.”—Paul A. Volcker, chairman of the Federal Reserve (1979 to 1987) under Presidents Carter and Reagan and currently chairman of the Volcker Alliance “Jim Stone has seen health care from all sides and cuts through the complexities to what really matters beautifully.” —Atul Gawande, author of Being Mortal “This is an excellent book, authoritative, informative, very well written, and of course directed to the big issues people care about.”—Edward O. Wilson, University Research Professor Emeritus, Harvard University, Twice Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Non-Fiction   “An important book for readers of any political stripe who want to get beyond the current domestic policy impasse.  You may not agree with everything Stone advocates, but every argument he makes is worthy of serious attention.”—Tom Daschle, Former U.S. Senate Majority Leader (Democrat, S. Dakota)   “Smart, thoughtful, clearly very informed—yet absolutely accessible.  It can be difficult to strike this balance, but Stone has caught it exactly.”—Rebecca Henderson, John and Natty McArthur University Professor, Harvard Business School   “Jim Stone's book shows that we can indeed solve many of the nation's seemingly intractable problems if we follow clear headed, non-partisan thinking.  If you care about our future, you should read this book.”—David T. Ellwood, Scott M. Black Professor of Political Economy and Former Dean of the Harvard Kennedy School of Government   “Five Easy Theses provides clear-eyed and non-technical explanations of five pressing economic issues: health-care costs, income inequality, government debt, college affordability, and financial-sector reform. These are some of the most complex policy challenges we face, all with multiple possible solutions. Even readers who don’t agree with Stone’s proposed policy responses will appreciate his straightforward and thought-provoking presentation of the issues.”—Christina Paxon, President of Brown University, for Bloomberg, "Best Books of 2016"“Stone has written a powerful, thought-provoking book.  Whatever your political party or philosophy, you need to take all five of his theses seriously.”—Clayton Yeutter, former Chairman, Republican National Committee, and former United States Secretary of Agriculture  “An extraordinarily impressive and important book. Stone is smart, balanced, and sensible, three traits that are in desperately short supply in our discourse about the future of the country.  His analysis is penetrating, logical and powerful, without ideological spin. Every policy idea he presents follows from that logic. You don't have to agree with all of his proposals to realize his book’s value to politicians, policymakers, and citizens everywhere.” —Norman Ornstein, author, political scientist, and resident scholar at the American Enterprise Institute   “This book is a recipe for restoring America’s greatness.  Stone offers thoroughly persuasive solutions to five economic and social problems we often consider insoluble.  The more closely we follow his prescriptions, the brighter our national future will be.”—Stephen Kinzer, author of All the Shah’s Men and The Brothers    “James Stone’s Five Easy Theses is masterfully written, straightforward, and free of jargon.  The marvelous chapter on income and wealth distribution presents a compelling essay on inequality in the United States.  Stone speaks with particular and rare authority on these issues. People should listen to what he has to say.”— Janet Gornick, Director, Luxembourg Income Study, and Professor of Political Science and Sociology, Graduate Center, City University of New York   “Well-crafted and highly engaging, James Stone’s Five Easy Theses takes on five of the nation’s biggest problems and offers solutions that are as simple and accessible as they are illuminating.  Particularly at a time of intense partisan polarization, Five Easy Theses is refreshingly honest—a model of straight talk.  Readers may not agree with everything Stone proposes, but they’ll marvel at his command of the issues and finish the book with a new sense of possibility and much to cheer about.”—David A. Moss, John G. McLean Professor of Business Administration, Harvard Business School   “A pithy, well-documented distillation of pressing public policy issues including the causes of America’s annual trillion dollar overspend on healthcare—and what, in practical terms, we could do as a nation to substantially lower costs, and perhaps even improve outcomes.  In vivid prose that combines convincing evidence and compelling stories, Stone persuasively argues that a universal, single-payer system should replace our highly inflationary patchwork of private insurance and government programs.”—Jonathan D. Quick, MD, MPH, Management Sciences for Health, Global Health Council, and Harvard Medical School “Five Easy Theses contains cogent, insightful, well-articulated policy prescriptions for a divided nation grappling with critical economic issues.  Even if you don’t agree with the policies Stone proposes, the book contains important ideas we all need to think hard about.”—Michael S. Helfer, Former Vice Chairman, Citigroup, Inc.   "In Five Easy Theses, Stone tackles the tough issues:  our educational divide, inequality, and eroding retirement security.  Not everyone will agree with him on the details of every proposal.  But his bold ideas for reform bring a combination of compassion and insight to the national debate."—Alicia H. Munnell, Peter F. Drucker Professor of Management Sciences, Carroll School of Management; Director, Center for Retirement Research at Boston College; and former Assistant Secretary of the Treasury “Stone’s experience as a successful insurance entrepreneur, an economist, and a former financial regulator, lends substantial credibility to his view that highly leveraged financial derivatives and other ‘innovative’ financial instruments carry risks to the financial system that far outweigh their public good.” —Ricki R. Tigert, former Chairman, Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation “This book is eminently readable, accessible, and sensible. It should be required reading for every member of Congress. Jim Stone understands the issues, the underlying tradeoffs, and the very real choices that must be made if we as a nation are to address our greatest economic challenges.”—Lawrence S. Bacow, President of Tufts University (2001-2011)

From the Inside Flap

Already garnering praise in the academy and on both side of the political aisle for its accessible and hopeful message, James M. Stone’s Five Easy Theses lays out commonsense solutions to our most pressing—and seemingly intractable—domestic policy problems. In straightforward style, Stone presents five vexing issues and the myths that cloud their resolution, revealing powerful, if controversial, solutions to each. With clear, forward-looking recommendations, he shows how we can  •      Shore up Social Security •      Tame the federal deficit •      Rein in Wall Street •      Make health care and education more affordable and effective •      Curb inequalities of wealth and opportunity         These vitally important accomplishments are well within our reach, Stone argues, and would only require us to cast off the well-worn partisan straitjacket that has thwarted all attempts to address them in the past. A must-read for anyone—regardless of political affiliation—who cares about the future of this country, Five Easy Theses shows how America can restore the historical decency and prosperity that made it the envy of the world.

James M. Stone has written a splendid book that provides a blueprint for action on some seemingly intractable public policy issues in the United States. Stone begins the book by providing background of his own experience as economist, public administrator, and businessman. He writes, “I am a democrat, but this is not a partisan book. Americans of every political stripe . . . share these concerns”.Stone has become concerned about the calcified, ossified, and ineffective government that has prevailed over the last few years in Washington, D. C. He is alarmed by the acrimony, myth-making, and half-truths about public finance in this country. Rather than running to the respective corners to attack the other guy and the other party--on economic issues-- in order to aggravate and elevate the public vitriol—he hopes that elected officials will promote the public interest and find common ground in attempting to resolve the difficult financial issues that beset the country. He writes, “Politicians in both parties steer away from exactly the subjects they ought to be addressing in favor of sound bites, “gotchas” and mini-matters.” He concludes his introduction by stating that ”the book is a short collection of public essays aimed at convincing [the reader] that the adoption of a few familiar commonsense ideas could make the country operate more effectively”.In succeeding chapters Stone unpacks the problems and solutions to five public policy areas that have bedeviled politicians for the past generation: fiscal balance; inequality; education; health care; and financial sector reform. In each chapter he provides rational and coherent policies that could be enacted to address the issues. For example, he suggests reducing “tax expenditures” and interest deductions to help balance the federal budget. He also provides fertile ideas for reducing the disparity in incomes and wealth, the costs of health care, and strategies to reform financial institutions such as investment banks. He also presents exciting ideas for changes in the U.S. education system—one of which is universal national service. The idea of youth service in this country is not new. The Civilian Conservation Corps in the New Deal era is one of the best known examples. The Peace Corps, Vista, and Americorps are other examples that emerged in the 1960’s through the 1990’s. President George W. Bush advocated mandatory youth service in 2009 when he proposed the Serve America Act. Yet there has been insufficient political consensus on the value of universal mandatory service to the country. Objections include that it is compulsory—rather than voluntary—and that it is expensive. Stone counters with this thoughtful response. [It may be] “the only workable answer to the major issues in American education compatible with cultural realities. It would be an attractive course for its patriotic and social harmony benefits as well. The right program would trade service for financing in the case of the college contingent and provide the absent vocational training for those ending their academic training after high school.”James M. Stone has written an excellent book concerning public policy reform in this country. His work serves simultaneously as a primer and resource full of suggestions that invite further study and better understanding of some critical policy issues we face as a nation. I recommend the book most highly.

I just finished reading James Stone’s “Five Easy Theses: Commonsense Solutions to American’s Greatest Economic Challenges”. I recommend it. Stone is the founder and CEO of Boston-based Plymouth Rock Assurance Corporation. He was a lecturer in Economics at Harvard in the early 1970s, and then Massachusetts' Commissioner of Insurance from 1975 to 1979. He was appointed chairman of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission by President Carter in 1979, and remained on the Commission until 1983.The five challenges his book speaks to are: fiscal balance, inequality, education, healthcare, and financial reform. His extensive experience in the insurance industry and in government provides a unique perspective from which to analyze these problems (the first and last in particular) and think creatively about how they can be / need to be addressed. The changes in policy he recommends flow logically from a careful analysis of the origins of each of the problems and their impact on our economy and our democracy today.Though a self-avowed Democrat with a business man’s perspective, he’s careful not to let his analysis or his recommendations be influenced by politics. He admits that some of his recommendations are unlikely to be adopted in the current political environment. Nevertheless, he puts them forward as goals he thinks reasonable people can agree are worth striving for.Bottom line, Stone’s book is a welcome contribution to an informed discussion of some of the most serious challenges the country faces today. It deserves to be widely read.

I'm a conservative republican, and so I naturally had strong disagreements with some of Jim Stone's ideas. But regardless of whether you agree or disagree with his policy prescriptions, Stone's ideas are concisely and powerfully argued and represent the best of liberal thought. His own career makes him better capable than almost anyone else to speak to the role of proper economic regulation, and how companies can see regulators not as enemies but as allies in serving the common good. The 5 theses range from liberal (single payer healthcare) to conservative (cutting entitlement spending) to non-partisan (promoting a national service year), and Stone's intellectual range - in addition to his thorough consideration of the implementation and effects of each policy - that makes this book worth reading regardless of your political persuasion.

Five Easy Theses is a thoughtful effort to solve five central, but seemingly intractable, policy issues facing this country. It is insightful and balanced. While he admits to his Democratic leaning, the author goes out of his way to engage in a fruitful conversation with someone like me, who has known him for several decades, who grew up as a New England Independent who normally voted Republican. His intended audience is not the doctrinaire Left or Right--no preaching to choirs--but the sensible center, that is, those of us who are ready to sit down and work at finding some workable solutions. You might find yourself quibbling around the edges, but, I would hope, you will delight in having a serious conversation. In the context of the 2016 Presidential campaign, Five Easy Theses is a refreshing and needed antidote to mindless verbiage. One commenter disparaged the book as wonkish, which suggests that serious policy problems can be reduced to soundbites. This book will be welcomed by the serious citizen.

The Big Umbrella

Review

Illustrator Bates applies her signature watercolor, gouache, and pencil style to a quiet story about a smiling umbrella, a tale sparked by a conversation with her seventh-grade daughter, co-author Juniper Bates. The eponymous rain protection is a big, red, friendly, helpful umbrella that sits near the front door and "likes to spread its arms wide" when it rains. As the pages turn, the umbrella grows in size, its smile ever widening, "to give shelter." It gathers all in—tall, hairy, plaid. "It doesn't matter how many legs you have," the omniscient narrator assures, as a basset hound droops forlornly outside its shelter before being welcomed in. While the book does not bill itself as political, it is hard to read it without thinking of current events—and of the umbrella as a metaphor for the United States. "Some people worry that there won't be enough room under the big umbrella," the narrator warns. "But the amazing thing is…there is." The final spread of this gentle picture book is an illustration of diverse people in a park: a black jogger; a white man in a wheelchair with a small dog on a leash; a brown woman wearing a hijab with a butterfly in her palms; two men and three children (in child seats), all of different skin colors, riding a tandem bike. A subtle, deceptively simple book about inclusion, hospitality, and welcoming the "other."(Picture book. 3-6) (Kirkus 11/1/17)Wearing a yellow slicker and boots on a rainy day, a child carries an open red umbrella down a city street. On each page, a sentence lightly personifies the umbrella: “It likes to spread its arms wide. / It loves to give shelter. / It loves to gather people in.” More and more folks join the child under its rapidly expanding canopy, until, in the last illustration, the umbrella arches over a park filled with animals and culturally diverse, differently abled people, all enjoying themselves and their surroundings. The appealing watercolor, gouache, and pencil illustrations work beautifully with the text to tell the story. In contrast to the gray skies, the red umbrella stands out visually, creating a warm, cheerful space for those beneath it. The main attraction of this expansive picture book is neither the plot nor the concept, but the upwelling of a boundlessly inclusive spirit reminiscent of Leodhas and Hogrogian’s Caldecott-winning Always Room for One More (1965). Well designed for classroom read-aloud sessions, this open-ended picture book creates a natural springboard for discussion. (Booklist Nov 1, 2017)This sweet extended metaphor uses an umbrella to demonstrate how kindness and inclusion work. The big umbrella waits by the door with a smile. “It is a big, friendly umbrella. It likes to help.” It’s a rainy day and help is welcome, so the umbrella, once opened, provides shelter to all comers. First to its owner, and then to a ballerina, a dog, a skater, a monster…there is no limit to how many can fit under its widespread arms. “Some people worry that there won’t be enough room under the big umbrella. But the amazing thing is…there is.” Bates’s signature sketchy watercolors begin the story on the endpapers with a downpour and heavy, wet clouds. The muted colors of the rainy cityscape give contrast to the smiling red umbrella and the folks it is protecting. Each page is lighter than the one before until the sun is out, and a final spread opens to show just how much room there is. Bates and her young daughter thought up the idea for this story during a rain storm. The message is direct but not didactic, useful in discussion about classroom and family behaviors, community-building and kindness in general, not to mention helpful for discussion about the current political climate. VERDICT A lovely addition to any library collection, for classroom use or for sharing at home.   (School Library Journal December 1, 2017)

I almost never buy a book before borrowing it from the library since I'm so choosy when it comes to children's literature, but I bought this book because my child loves umbrellas, and the cover art was so inviting, that I couldn't resist. What a great chance I took! This book is beautifully illustrated and totally sets the rainy mood. The umbrella is a sweet character that loves to help and be kind to others. Can it get any better than that for a children's book? I doubt it! The umbrella inlcudes all creatures big and small in its protection from the rain. Such a sweet and uplifting storyline! The Big Umbrella is a welcome addition to my family's library of books that are socially concious, peace promoting, and inclusive of all. Absolutely recommend!Check out more of my children's picture book reviews on my instagram: greatreadsforlittles

The message of the book is great and the pictures are lovely. I love that kindness, inclusion, and diversity are addressed, but it’s a very short read. I guess for such a large book (in dimension), I expected a book that would take longer than 30 seconds to read. This book may be good for babies or little ones with short attention spans, but I don’t imagine this would interest a toddler. I think you will just need to make the decision if this very short story would be good for you/ your family. I really wanted to love this book, but it’s just okay for me. Again, I love the message but I can’t say I would recommend it. If you want a book on kindness, I would look to “Be Kind” by Pat Zietlow Miller since that book also discusses kindness and the characters are diverse.

The story behind this book is just as beautiful as the story inside this book! A mother and daughter dreamed this up together--I want to thank both of them for dreaming up and creating a book with such an important message: "the more you give, the more you get". The artwork is whimsical and lovely, every bit as warm and pure as the message.I also want to thank the publisher Simon & Schuster/ Paula Wiseman books for publishing an ORIGINAL children's story--that's happening less and less--so BRAVO!!

The words are just enough for the story paired with the page-by-page delightful illustrations of those invited to shelter under that “big umbrella”, and page by page, everyone is invited. It’s what I call a big smile of a book, one to read, enjoy and discuss with a child or a group of children. It reminds me of the concept of everyone having a seat at the table, and it is so good!

Bravo to Amy and Juniper Bates! This book is a delightful and imaginative story with a metaphor that stirs the soul. It is timely and profound, yet simple enough for young children to grasp its important message. The illustrations are as beautiful and touching as the story. It is a true work of art made even more special by the fact that it was written and illustrated by a mother-child team.

A simple, easy book about how to be an "includer". My kindergarten English language learners loved it. EAsy to understand, not too wordy, and the perfect length for 4 - 7 year old kids.

This book seemed great when i read reviews online but it wasn't as great as i thought it was going to be. The message from the book is great - inclusion and helping people - but there were very few words in the book, it was mostly pictures. It was a little boring for my two year old and i assume it would be boring for older children as well.

Lovely story promoting kindness and inclusion!

Escape to Gold Mountain: A Graphic History of the Chinese in North America, by David H.T. Wong

From Booklist

The tortuous path to assimilation taken by Chinese immigrants to North America over the last 150 years is movingly depicted in this graphic novel relating the story of the fictional but representative Wong family. The saga begins in 1845 when Wong Ah Gin stows away on a ship bound for San Francisco. Other Chinese, including members of the Wong clan, follow in his tracks to work on the Transcontinental Railroad; but once that’s completed they’re seen as economic competitors, leading to the racist Chinese Exclusion Act, which prompts many to move to Canada or elsewhere (Ah Gin heads for China, where he teaches English to Sun Yat Sen). The story follows subsequent Wong generations as they work in fisheries, open restaurants, fight in WWII, and become lawyers and physicians. Some readers might find the rough-hewn drawings and one-dimensional characterizations unnuanced, but the directness will appeal to teens who are likely to be unfamiliar with the history. While the work may be artistically blunt, it resoundingly succeeds as an educational and inspirational effort. Grades 8-12. --Gordon Flagg

Quick, how much do you know about the history of the Chinese in American and Canada? What does Gold Mountain refer to? What is a paper son?If all you know about the Chinese in America is that they helped build the American and Canadian transcontinental railroad, then this book will fill you in on all the rest that the Chinese did when they came here. This graphic novel was originally going to be called 'The Iron Chink" because of the machine that was invented int he early 1900's to gut fish, and put thousands of Chinese workers out of business. The author thought it would be more striking, but then realize that might turn people off from reading the book, even though that was the name for the machine. The novel follows a fictional Wong family from the first arrival to the 21st century, where the Canadian government offers an apology for all they did to them.In between we have all the horrors that happened to the Chinese, such as the working of the railroad, and the loss of life there, to the San Francisco earthquake that allowed for Paper sons, to the head tax in Canada and the barring from the mutual countries, Chinese families still in China. An excellent introduction to a part of history that is often overlooked and forgotten.

David Wong does an excellent job in presenting a complex and controversial history of Chinese immigration in both the US and Canada. A rollicking good story. All immigrants face adversity -- both economic hardship and racial prejudice, but the history of Chinese in North America is particularly vivid. Wong's decision to present their story as a graphic novel is effective. His history illustrates how a once-despised group overcame exceptional challenges to achieve success in their new home land. He manages to avoid platitudes pity and anger in showing the role of racism affected the Chinese. I thought I knew this history but I learned many fascinating details I hadn't realized by reading Wong's book.

This fascinating and graphic account of the experiences of Chinese immigrants to the United States and Canada is a must-read to understand the history of our area and the discrimination and problems faced by the Chinese who settled here. Their perseverance and fortitude is awe-inspiring. This is an important book in the history of immigration to the United States and Canada.

This turned out to be very interesting although I didn't realize that it was a graphic novel or that it was largely about Canada. Nevertheless, it was an interesting read and being a graphic novel, I was able to interest my eleven-year old grandson in this. His part Chinese background led him to be interested in this story.

In a few swipes it becomes evident that this painful history forms the backbone to how North America was deformed, and ever grateful for those that gave the ultimate sacrifice for the generations to come.

Sad in many ways but very interesting

Everything was perfect and also and I like how neat was the packaging.

This book contains some strong language for a school setting. I wanted to use it to help educate the students about the chinese experience, but it was too sassy and sarcastic. The history is accurate, but it is hard to cover up the anger that this author has. There have been mistakes in our history to say the least. The best thing is to tell the story, but use language that is workable with middle school students. I won't use it with students.

#297,712 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

A clear exposition of the strength of the stories of the Creation and the Fall, of their value for the contemporary world. Very insightful. Very helpful. Written by a man who understands the modern world. Written and translated in an understandable way. Not highly technical in roughly 80% of its text. These were originally four homilies, which may contribute to their conversational and lyrical tone. They are quite a contrast to the stern Germanic stereotype which dominates the popular caricature of the author. It is important to understand that, in order to explain opposing viewpoints, sometimes he speaks in the voice of a wrong-headed opinion for quite some time. A couple times I found myself thinking, why is he saying this, and then realizing, oh, he's giving voice to a different viewpoint. Some quotes from the first homily:“These words with which the Holy Scripture begins always have the effect on me of the solemn tolling of a great old bell, which stirs the heart from afar with its beauty and dignity and gives it an inkling of the mystery of eternity.”“Its purpose ultimately would be to say one thing, God created the world. The world is not a chaos of opposed forces; nor is it the dwelling of demonic powers from which human beings must protect themselves. The sun and the moon are not deities that rule over them, and the sky that stretches over their heads is not full of mysterious and adversary divinities. Rather all of this comes from one power, from God's eternal Reason, which became in the Word the power of creation. Thus insofar as human beings realized that the world came from the Word, they ceased to care about the gods and demons. In addition the world was freed so that reason might lift itself up to God and so that human beings might approach this God fearlessly. In this Word they experienced the true enlightenment that reveals to them that there is only one power everywhere and that we are in his hands. This is the living God, and this same power which created the earth and the stars and which bears the whole universe is the very one whom we meet in the Word of Holy Scripture. In this Word we come into contact with the real primordial force of the world and with the power that is above all powers.”“Even today faith in creation is not unreal; even today it is reasonable; even from the perspective of the data of natural sciences it is the “better hypothesis,” offering a fuller and better explanation than any of the other theories. Faith is reasonable. The reasonableness of creation derives from God's Reason, and there is no other really convincing explanation. The reasonableness of the universe provides us with access to God's Reason… Therefore we must not in our own day conceal our faith in creation. We may not conceal it, for only if it is true that the universe comes from freedom, love, and reason, and that these are the real underlying powers, can we trust one another, go forward into the future, and live as human beings. God is the Lord of all things because he is their creator, and only therefore can we pray to him. For this means that freedom and love are not ineffectual ideas but rather that they are sustaining forces of reality.”

Is Genesis relevant? Or is it just another creation myth? The author believes that the Biblical story of creation "does not in fact explain how human persons came to be but rather what they are." This short book of 100 pages is a collection of four homilies by Pope Benedict the XVI. It challenges believing Catholics to go beyond the conventional Catechism approach to the Creation story. The section on original sin ( which the author calls "a certainly misleading and imprecise term") certainly jolted my own understanding of this doctrine. Ratzinger state that Original sin means all the sins of human beings, from the very beginning, are interlinked. He defines sin as a loss or disturbance of relationship. Therefore it is never restricted to the individual. Sin is always an offense that touches others, that alters the world, and damages it. We are all born into a sin-damaged world. Therefore, each person from the very start is damaged in relationships and does not engage in them as he or she ought. The author also invites the reader to consider the consequences of believing that the cosmos is only the result of chance.By implication, what are the consequences of the West's rejection of the Judeo -Christian viewpoint, irregardless of whether it is true or not? Are we not redefining what it means to be a human? There is a lot packed into this 100 page book. It would be a good book club selection as it is packed with many ideas that will provoke discussion.

I have to confess I am a huge fan of Pope Benedict XVI. He has left us a legacy of written work that will last for generations and beyond. This particular book is probably a great place to get started for Benedict neophytes. It is a series of homilies he gave on Genesis and how it and the Old Testament point towards the life, death and resurrection of Christ. Clearly this is a book for Christians. But I would say anyone who wants to understand the Catholic view of the Bible would learn a lot by reading this fine little book. Once you've read this you can find other books of his essays and eventually read his three volume of life of Christ.

Anytime you read something by Ratzinger (Benedict XVI) you will read that part of the Bible differently than you did before. In this case it is the story of creation. He is not afraid to address real arguments and other points of view. Unlike many authors, he takes the time to understand other interpretations, even explaining why one could come to those other conclusions. I think he generally respects their intellectual ability. Then, he explains why he believes his interpretation to be the correct one. He is definitely one of the great theological debaters of our time. The only reason I gave this book a rating of 4, instead of 5, is that it is taken from a group of homilies. Naturally, it was intended to be spoken to an audience, not read. As a result, the language is not up to his usual standards of flow for readability. Sometimes I had to re-read passages to understand what he is trying to say. That is not true of most of his books.

Great book. I love Pope Benedict XVI. He is truly a treasure. He explains in few and essential words how the Book of Genesis tells us what it means to be a human being. We are creations of God and, as his creation, we are made to be in relation to Him and to others. But, of course, the analysis goes further and deeper. If I could give this book 10, 50, 100 stars I would.

A must read! Ratzinger's genius is his brevity of his extensive knowledge and wisdom. He is basically able to complete salvation history from the first three chapters of Genesis by throwing enough rope over to the New Testament to make the connection. While this book is easy to read for a deep topic, I still recommend reading only one chapter a day to allow time to reflect.
