In pinpointing the connections between the two, Claire Bidwell Smith is the warm and wise friend guiding you toward deeper control over your thoughts, instead of your thoughts wielding control over you."―Rebecca Soffer, coauthor of Modern Loss: Candid Conversation about Grief. Claire Bidwell Smith tackles grief and loss in Anxiety: The Missing Stage of Grief the way she has in her two previous books (The Rules of Inheritance and After This: When Life is Over, Where Do We Go)--directly and gently, honestly and warmly, realistically and optimistically. Reading this book is like overhearing a conversation between a beautiful and gifted writer and the most incisive therapist. Bidwell Smith is comfortable as both, and shines in her latest book. Included with her own experiences are tools for assessment and the exercises she offers to patients dealing with grief and anxiety in her private practice. She has astutely identified the role that anxiety plays in loss and grief, and has written this wonderful book as a service to all who are suffering. Five enthusiastic stars.

I love this book so much I already bought a second copy for a friend. I lost an aunt who was like a second mother to me in April and felt like I was struggling through the grief process. I love that not only did this make me feel like everything I was going through was not only normal, but also gave me exercises to help me work through my grief in a healthy way. I'm now a bit more than six months out from the loss and I feel like it's helped me to find the gift in all of this and become more resilient. This is a really helpful book that I now recommend to anyone who's struggling through a loss.

I found this book helpful, kind, sincere, and smart. I read it 6 months after the death of my father. It helped with many feelings I was having around his death, and it really helped with the unexpected anxiety I was feeling. I found it helpful, as well, in forging a new way forward with my mother, who lost her best friend and partner of 61 years. I also found the booked helped me deal with some very old grief around some childhood issues with my dad. The author speaks from both years of experience working as a grief therapist and from her own personal experiences of loss. I've bought copies of the book for several relatives and friends, including my mother (who is also finding it very helpful).

This book is definitely worth reading and is very helpful. Give to a friend and read it your self. A

Extremely helpful and practical approach to healing from loss and managing the anxiety that stems from it. I want to buy a handful more of copies for friends/family since I found it to be a great tool and purchase.

Very helpful book

This book immediately appealed to me at both a personal and semi-professional level. I work with many people who deal with immense levels of anxiety but never quite realized how debilitating it could be until a few years ago when a loved one was mis-diagnosed with a life threatening illness. Fortunately, the diagnosis was wrong but it took several months to sort out and during that time, grief and anxiety turned my world upside down. The idea of anxiety being the missing stage of grief is a statement I would agree with 110%. Early in the book there is a solid justification proposed along with prior history of the author which is both engaging as well as compelling. That is where my interest waned. The author has a tendency to focus on panic attacks (something I did not experience) yet gives far less credence to the very real physical toll it takes on overall health both physical and psychological. Much of the book did little more than provide the same old self help generic information without really getting to the heart of the issue. Ultimately this was a disappointing book.

This is a thoughtful and informative book by a woman who has experienced grief at an early age. The test is both compassionate and informative. I got this book because my wife was suffering from anxiety after the death of her father. I thought that depression was the typical emotion, but it turns out that anxiety is often a typical response. This book gives a good overview as to why anxiety is often experienced and ways to reduce the suffering such anxiety produces. After reading this I was keen to get this into the hands of my wife. She has connected with many of the ideas and we have discussed the concepts together. This is a great resource for those suffering from anxiety in general and due to a death of a loved one in particular.
