5/2/20/17 UpdateI just wanted to add that this past weekend I was at a favorite quilt shop in Rockledge Florida and there were a half dozen shoppers huddled around the cutting table entranced at what they were looking at. Turned out that the shop had stitched up many (maybe all) of the blocks from this sampler book and the people there loved the blocks and couldn't hardly wait to get their hands on this book!I still contend that the blocks in this book are too cutesy for me and I will probably never make any of the blocks. If I had a do-over, I would not buy the book. HOWEVER, if the blocks on the covers of the book appeal to you, then you will love this book ... just like the shoppers at the quilt shop.4/21/2017 Original ReviewI'm a bit disappointed in the blocks in the book because so many of them are of simplistic designs that have an almost childish or "home made", look. I think "cutesy" is probably the best way of describing this block collection. Don't get me wrong ... if that is the look you are going for then this book is for you! (It's just not for me.)All the blocks finish at six inches (no other size option is provided). Many of the blocks are applique (using whatever technique you prefer; however, the patterns have been reversed for fusible applique), some are pieced, some paper pieced, and several are embroidered or have embroidery on them. There's also one or two blocks with hexagons and a block that includes Dresden wedges. There are more than five sewing motif blocks. My favorite of those is a paper-pieced block called Stitching Fashion by Charise Randle that is a dress with a spool of thread and needle...very cute. It is the block shown at the top center of the book cover (above the title).There are five quilts shown in the quilt gallery. The 100-Block Sampler quilt is a great way of viewing all of the blocks in the book. There are no instructions for constructing the quilts in the gallery. The full-sized patterns are on tear out sheets at the back of the book and the pages are printed on both sides which can be a pain sometimes. As mentioned above, applique designs on the pattern sheets have been reversed for fusible applique.In summary, if you like the looks of the blocks shown on the front and back covers of this book and you are looking for a collection of six inch blocks, then you are likely to love this book.
I wish I could comment directly on a review. On May 7th "MD" asked for help regarding the Pattern Sheets. There are two pull out pattern sheets. They are labeled front and back, so 1 & 2 are on the same piece of paper. Hope this helps her.The book is very well detailed with instructions. I find myself making mistakes if I don't read the instructions and when I actually read them, including the arrows showing me the direction to press my seams, everything works out great.I am finding that I spend considerable time picking out my fabrics for the individual blocks because I want the final quilt to be in harmony. I was really looking for a "sampler" to help me gain confidence in all areas of quilt making and this book includes a great variety.Be sure to join the Facebook group led by Pat Sloan as a new quilt along of The Splendid Sampler will be beginning this month. These blocks are mostly paper pieced. That was not disclosed in the description of the book. I HATE paper piecing and therefore paid for a book i won't use. As I flipped through the book, probably 60 are paper pieced, another 30 are applique and about 10 pieced. I thought the entire 100 "Spectacular" blocks were pieced -- my preferred sewing method. I wish Pat Sloan mentioned on her cover that these are mostly paper pieced.
I love the designer stories and the designs. Very nice and very inspiring, however, I do not like the pattern pull out section printed on both side of the paper and on huge sheets. It not only makes them difficult to copy it makes them difficult to trace with a light box because the lines show through from both sides.
I wanted to try some of the blocks that I have seen in others' finished projects, so even though authors Pat Sloan and Jane Davidson are well into Splendid Sampler 2, I picked up the Kindle version of SS1. I'm happy I bought it, and I've already completed a few of the blocks, finding the same clear directions and diagrams and a link to Martingale's web page where the foundation paper piecing, applique, and embroidery patterns can be found and printed out. The only aspect of this book that isn't as good as SS2 Kindle version is that the Table of Contents in this Kindle version doesn't list individual blocks by name within the categories of blocks, patchwork, foundation paper piecing, embroidery and applique. There is a detailed index with page numbers, however, so that's a minor point. It's a different feel from working from a paper pattern, but I always hand write a cut list for making blocks in my own fabric choices anyway, so no inconvenience there. Considering the low price, this is an outstanding value and many happy hours of sewing for any level of quilter.
I joined Pat's group last year, and joined her again this year. The stories that go with each block is inspirational.The blocks are a bit challenging, if you have never tried paper piecing, applique, or embroidery.Pat and Jane have a sew along, and you can find plenty of inspiration and friendly advice and help on their website. I bought the book , and I am very happy with it. I am SURE you will be too!
Exactly what I hoped for! After spending about 30 minutes looking through the 100 blocks I easily found many that I would like to do. This book is beautiful and the stories go along with the blocks are very sweet. Thank you for such a lovely book!
