I love cooks illustrated and have subscribed for over 10 years. This has a lot of recipes with short cuts that compromise health such as buying store prepared food. Don’t waste your money

I am not a good cook by any means. I can bake, but when it comes to cooking I either over-cook or under-cook, or it just comes out a mess. This book has been awesome! It has simple directions and gives good detail on timing - which is the hardest part for me!! The way it's written is easy for beginners to understand without being overly wordy or "dummied down" for those that are more of a proficient cook. They use mostly ingredients I already have in the kitchen. If I am missing something, the recipes are usually simple enough that I can swap out an ingredient easily for something I have without ruining the entire dish. So far my husband and I have both been really impressed by these recipes. Now if only there was an easier way for me to have all of this information when I go grocery shopping to generate my list for me...Update: we have now had this for a few months and have been able to try a bunch more recipes out and haven't found a single one we don't like. My favorite so far has been the fish tacos (better than i've ever had in any restaurant!) Plus I was the one who found this cookbook, but now my husband acts like it's his cookbook because he likes it so much. This coming from someone who used to hate cookbooks and he never understood why anyone would use one. Well i think he gets it now. I even recommended a substitute for something we didn't have in the pantry and he had to go to the grocery store to get the exact item because he wanted to make it exactly how the recipe said. My how he has changed his tune.

The recipes sound very interesting but require so many ingredients that the average home cook probably does not have in their pantry. That kind of defeats the concept of simplicity. I am sure for people that do have these things stocked the book would be great.

I used this book for my entire menu this week, and am extremely impressed. Each recipe was a big winner, and they did NOT taste like typical thrown-together simple recipes. A real standout for me was the chicken and dumplings recipe. It made use of supermarket rotisserie chicken, chicken broth, and a few fresh veggies and all-purpose flour. It was amazingly flavorful, with perfect soft-springy drop dumplings, and the most complicated thing you had to do was chop the onion. THAT is how you do semi-homemade, Ms. Lee. The pork schnitzel with apple coleslaw was also especially good, especially for a 20 minute recipe.The book is very clearly written with big, beautiful pictures, and helpful hints and tips about the preparation, ingredients, etc, in typical ATK fashion. These recipes are also more forgiving than usual of mistakes, ingredient substitutions, and other inaccuracies that can happen when you're in a rush. Any ATK or Cooks Illustrated fan will love this book, and even those who maybe are iffy on their typical cookbooks should give this one a try. This is simple, straightforward home cooking that will be welcome on any family table, and the recipes are easily scaled for larger or smaller families thanks to the simple preparation and generally forgiving nature of the recipes in the first place.Give it a shot!

I am so happy to find another of these books. I owned one and my grand daughter loved the simplicity of the recipes in it, so I found one for her. It was used but in great condition and I am grateful that I had the opportunity to get the book for her. Excellent cookbook.

I own this cookbook and bought this one for a friend, that's how much I like it!

It has added some variety to our not-very-imaginiative normal fare and every recipe we have tried so far has worked well, even with substitutions and omissions (usually in the spice department). But they have all taken more than half an hour to do. But are still worth it. Going to get another copy as a gift.

One of their best ... 'Simple Recipes' is eclectic in its offerings.My daughter and I appreciate fine cookbooks and we always share new acquisitions with one another.I was so impressed with this compilation that I knew it had to be on my bookshelf as well.Cooks Illustrated continues to present timely facts on purchases, preps, reviews of ingredients throughout.The book is glossy quality paper with wonderful color photos.Have already put into action a few of the recipes, which were excellent.When I read a recipe, it has become second nature for me to actually foresee what it will taste like and so many of this book's recipes are going to be winners in my estimation.Bon Appetit!

A superb introduction to the subject of quantum physics.Here's why I love this book: 1. It provided me with a truly informative introduction to the subject of quantum physics. 2. It is exceedingly well written. Sentence structure, topic organization and flow all read as well as the very best of any modern novel. 3. Excellent use of analogies, including discussion of where the analogies break down (as almost all analogies do). 4. Helpful diagrams (for the most part - maybe 10% could have been eliminated). 5. The book is interspersed with many 2-page "asides" (typically, more in-depth discussions of a topic), which helps to break up the book so that it is not quite so monolithic (and encouraged me to keep reading). 6. Importantly (for me), the author makes a point of refreshing the reader's memory regarding a topic or term if the same has not been used within the last 20 or so pages. 7. Finally, the proof is in the pudding. After reading this book I can describe the concepts of the quantum wavefunction, superposition, entanglement, etc. to my 88 year old mother, and she gets it! The book leaves one with enough information to actually ponder the subject in more detail, but not necessarily looking for more information (although the book does conclude with an excellent suggested reading list, including brief summaries of the suggested readings and their level of difficulty). My only hope is that Dr. Al-Khalili decides to write a follow-up version in the near future that perhaps takes things to the next level mathematically (but short of "Quantum Theory" by David Bohm, which I found to be mathematically overwhelming). Perhaps there is a "quantum leap" between the general concepts introduced in "Quantum: A Guide for the Perplexed" and the math of quantum theory as per Bohm's book, but if there is any middle ground, I'm sure that Dr. Al-Khalili can find it, and can make it approachable for someone with a bit of math background.

Terrific book. The best book (of about 10) that I've read about quantum physics. It's not for beginners. Start with something easier first. But the author, a nuclear physicist of some note, knows what he's talking about. He's very precise in his communication without resorting to equations. He's honest about what is known and what is not known. He is able to clarify quite a number of issues which other authors seem foggy on. This is just the best book on quantum physics out there!

I find Jim Al-Khalili's writing style very personable and down to earth making the complex easy to understand.I would recommend this book to anyone beginning to explore quantum physics.

Nicely illustrated, good graphical presentation. But more complicated than I expected. He tries to be lighthearted and even comical, but I'm not sure it really works. You still come away thinking "Wha...?" Definitely not a "dummy's guide to..." approach.

Got this book from the library and it always stood out as one of the best intro books to this subject- and I checked out dozens. Happily for me I discovered it here on amazon and just bought it. The text is non pretentious and engaging, the illustrations are pretty good too. I never get tired of the implications of quantum mechanics and this book keeps the subject lively. Thought provoking.A dinosaur bone might not exist until you observe it, but when you DO observe it, it exists 'as it has' for millions of years. Wonderful stuff.

The author does a great job of making the concepts understandable and of highlighting practical applications of quantum weirdness.A basic understanding of science will make it easier to follow - the last third gets a little heavier.Well worth reading, enjoyable, great analogies that clarify the concepts.

After I viewed all of Jim's BBC shows on YOUTUBE, I was delighted to find this book. As a former Physics undergrad, I found it slick - beautiful - and well illustrated (although the point of several examples was obscure).I was, however, a tad bit disappointed in the explanations - some were very basic and clear while other discussions - particularly on the subject of entanglement - drifted into (what I call) Quanto-Speek much too quickly with little introduction or reader preparation.I loved what I read, but I can't say I'm any less perplexed than before. This is not your basic Quantum Physics for Dummies.If you're not looking for crystal clear explanations, this is an essential and enlightening introductory text - sure to pique your interest.F.

I've read a lot of books on quantum mechanics (as a lay person -- this is not my field). For clarity of explanation, and a scary ability to intuit what questions the reader has and answer them all, this book is unmatched. At times it was just uncanny how sometihng in the book would raise a question in my mind, and the writer would then answer it in the next paragraph. Once I was finished I only had a single question, which was "Can atoms or molecules be entangled also, since that is usually done with photons?" I'm sure I could google it and find out. Literally every other question I had at the time was answered by this book.The book covers Young's double slit experiment, spooky action at a distance, touches on retrocausality (giving the impression that most people in the field don't believe in it), explains various physical interpretations of quantum mechanics ("OK, we know the theory is accurate, now WHY might very small things behave so bizzarely?"), makes a great distinction between waves and the wave function, explains the history/evolution of how the field looks at the collapse of the wave function and that experiments are actually being done now that are starting to measure this... Really, if you know a bit about quantum mechanics and want to know the latest thinking in the field, presented in a completely non-mathematical manner, from a phycisist who has obviously pondered the "Whys" of his field instead of just accepting that the math works, this is the book.

Not difficult to read and well organized, this book reveals the casual and often unwitting racism in the way we (white people) talk. It is not about the racism of other people. For black racism, see Ta-Nehisi Coates, Between The World And Me. I do wish there had been a little more about the theory of race and that the fact that that there is no biological basis for it.

Read this and you'll see everyday language in a new light. I'm not entirely convinced of some of the details (e.g., that loanwords are stolen words). However, I'm convinced of Hill's larger thesis (that racism persists in part because of typical patterns of language use, irrespective of individual speaker motives).

Jane Hill's book is amazingly clear and approachable. Though the message is simple, it was still an eye-opener-- that racism is not what we commonly think it is. The systematic breakdown of how language use embeds racism is very interesting. I highly recommend this book for anyone in sociology, culture studies, linguistics, or related fields.

Jane Hill makes several good points about how racism is related to white culture and how all cultures reiterate discrimination towards opposing races and identities. This book will sure make you think twice about what you say unconsciously and how you act towards others.

I can't believe how good this book is for illuminating what mathematics is. I have spent most of the past forty-five years trying to find the words to communicate what Eugenia Cheng has so masterfully done in this book. Whenever I get a chance in the future to talk about mathematics I will steal her metaphors and examples. I will also be recommending the book to all of my colleagues in education as well as students. I could not stop reading and wondered if she could continue, chapter after chapter, to come up with examples to make her case. She succeeded right up to the end. I am a little sorry now that I did not pursue Category Theory with more diligence when I first encountered it in the 60’s, but I may look into it again at this late date.

I found this to be a terrific book and I wish I had been exposed to this while a student. It certainly makes mathematics much more comprehensible. On reading this book I've realized that my career in IT has been all about category theory. I would have given this book five stars, except that I recently purchased Cheng's recently released book, Cakes, Custard and Category Theory... which is this book with a different title. And why aren't the two titles cross referenced by using Amazon's Formats and Editions feature? Just because the publishers are different, doesn't excuse this literal duplicity.

This is the best book about math that I've ever read. This coming from someone who had loved math from a young age, majored in math, and have taught math for several years. Dr. Cheng deftly and simply talks about what math *is* (and what it is not). This is one of the biggest problems I face as a teacher. Most people don't know what math is and worse think they know what math is. This is a beautiful defense of the beauty in math while still maintaining a simple approach. I look forward to reading whatever Dr. Cheng writes in the future.

This is both an entertaining and interesting book on math. It's mostly well-written in the first person by the author, who uses cooking and recipes as a metaphor for math. The metaphor mostly works, although to get it, you probably need to know the basics of cooking. She also uses some other metaphors even more effectively. It explores math concepts one chapter at time, but the author can't help but introduce some later concepts in her earlier chapters. Her discussion of abstract thinking early in the book is outstanding. I have one quibble, which is that it's not very well edited. There are a couple of grammatical errors and some editing errors that are surprising for a book on math, which generally has a certain precision to it. (But not always, as the author points out.)

This is a wonderful book for people who love math. (It doesn't hurt to have an interest in baking as well.) Eugenia Cheng does an excellent job of talking about math in connection with baking. I knew nothing about category math, or her, before I started her book, but when I finished it, I felt like I had a basic introduction and an interest in reading more of what she's done and more about category math. The section at the end was particularly good; it was clear, passionate, persuasive, and engaging. This was one of the best books I've read so far this year.

An interesting approach to mathematics, but got beyond the comprehension of someone without a background n mathematics. Though aimed at the general public, it probably would be most useful to those who need a refresher and update on current mathematical theory.

When I read the reviews about this book it seemed like an "easy to read book about mathematics." Although it starts out that way, about 3/4 of the way through the math gets pretty deep and the book, for me, became less inviting. If you're a math geek this book is probably your cup of tea, just not so much for me.

This is a much more interesting view of math than high school. It is not too abstract. There are applications to thinking that apply to everyday life. The cooking examples made it more interesting.

I first found this book at the library, I loved it so much I bought it here! As a parent of a teen with ds, it has so much needed information! It has what no other book has, information on their quirks and helps explain that it's common or "normal". It also answered my questions about what's to come as they enter high school and transition to work. It actually changed my focus from inclusion in the academic classrooms to functional skill building and job experience. It gave valuable advice on how get peer interaction and inclusion in the school community by working/volunteering in the lunch room, student store, office, running errands for teachers, going to the games, dances, etc.

This was recommended to me by the sister of an elderly person with Down Syndrome and I have absolutely been floored by it. It's challenging to find resources to help people who have "dual diagnoses" and this is one of the most comprehensive that I've come around. To top it all off, it's tone is pragmatic but positive. This is great for anyone who cares with someone with Down Syndrome, particularly with a "dual diagnosis" of mental illness or ASD. There's a lot here that has broader relevance and which is applicable to anyone caring for someone with an intellectual disability. The section on memory is a great example of why I found this invaluable; it addresses the different types of memory, identified strengths and weaknesses, and outlined what each might look like in real life. Please, more like this.

I think this is a great book for anyone who lives or works with adolescents or adults with Down Syndrome. My daughter, almost 19, never fit the typical Down Syndrome children are angels always so loving mold. This book helped to explain why in a way that I could understand. We are still going through a painful rough ride, but this book gives me information ( empowerment) that we will survive the rocky road and get to a place of peace. I also bought a copy for her teacher who has been teaching for over 20 years and she loved it as well. She has started loaning out her copy to parents who might not be able to afford their own copy. After she told me this I bought 2 more copy's so that anyone who wants access to this great book can have it. A definite 'MUST HAVE' for parents of young adults with Down Syndrome.

I am the mother of a 34 year old daughter with Down syndrome, and this is one of the best books on DS that I have ever seen. It is well written in understandable language and offers practical suggestions and steps to take. The authors of this book have worked with thousands of adults with Down syndrome at the Adult Down Syndrome Center in Illinois, and they really know their stuff. The book touches on all aspects of life for adolescents and adults with DS. There is a lot on what factors influence well-being and how physical problems can affect behavior. It addresses when things are "normal" and when to worry. The book is well organized, so you can go to the sections that apply to your situation. And if the person in your life with DS doesn't have any behavioral issues now, this book can help you keep it that way. I highly recommend this book.

I have a 23 year old son with Down Syndrome and this was a great read. There was a lot of information that was both informative and that I had not seen discussed (or at least not so well) before as well as some information that was just comforting... an aha... that really is just a normal DS thing... this book should be in everybody's DS library.

Ever since we were kids, I've been told my brother wouldn't live much longer. He's 18 months older than I am and has Down Syndrome. First the doctors said he wouldn't live past 10. Then he was expected to die before the age of 20. He did have some health problems, but none were life-threatening, and he grew up to be strong and athletic. Then, as he reached 40, I read reports claiming that "all" adults with DS would develop Alzheimer's Disease, usually in their 40s. This was an awful prospect! But now, at 53, he continues to be much the same - a little more set in his ways, perhaps - but healthy, capable, and active. When I learned about the book, "Mental Wellness in Adults with Down Syndrome", I ordered it immediately and have read it with great interest. It was fascinating to learn that adults with DS are no more likely to die young than anyone else, as long as they receive appropriate medical care, and that the incidence of Alzheimer's in this population is no more common that in the general population. Rather, it has been common for health issues to be ignored or not treated because they are often attributed to Down Syndrome instead of a treatable condition. And misunderstandings in the medical community of what is normal mental functioning in adults with DS have led to misdiagnoses of Alzheimers in many cases. This book has been a real eye-opener for me, and helped me understand my brother and appreciate him even more. It's about time!!!

It even includes a list of the R12 compressors by make and model that are compatible with the newer R34. And includes all the pros and cons about making this conversion. I mention this because there is a lot of confusion on this on the forums I found online, and if you want to know it all about conversions and, actually anything else to do with A/C, then this book is what you are looking for.

Bought one of these used for school, great condition, no complaints. Much cheaper than buying new which are way over priced.

So there is plenty of great information in this book, and I learned a ton from reading it. I like the tech tips and very detailed facts. However this does not make up for how awfully this book is organized. Either someone was paid by the page, or the publisher decided it would be fun to shuffle around everything. Is there a reason why A/C Compressor styles are spread across two chapters, or could they have just gotten their own? Why is Cabin Filter removal arbitrarily stuffed in the middle of the Heating Fixes Chapter? Why must it cycle btween A/C to Heat every chapter, doesn't it make more sense to separate them entirely? I'm usually a very attentive reader, but I keep drifting when the subject matter is all over the place. Fix the structure of this book and it will be great, otherwise, buy a different one.

I have just finished using this book in an online class (offered by the author). I could not disagree more with the "Don't buy this" review from July 28, 2008. I worked the tutorials and would say I have covered 80% of the examples in this book. I found 2 very minor typos. And no errors of susbstance.This book is a tutorial, rather than a reference. It can be hard to find specific information, but that is not how the book is intended to be used. IMHO, you will have a hard time finding a better HTML tutorial than this book.
