I just finished reading The Death of Reliability. When I first saw the book, I was intrigued by the cover. I was also concerned that since it was written by a doctor it would be full of big words and fancy sounding programs. I have read many of these types of books and set in many courses on this topic and the one thing they all have in common is they are based on theory. The difference in this book is Dr. Wright has done the things outlined in the book. So there are no theories just real world accounts and success and how to accomplish it. A surprise for me was the eye opening insight into how we have gotten into the mess we are in and what we can do about it. The organizations I have worked for all suffer from a majority failures that Dr. Wright discusses. I plan to recommend this book to my senior leaders in hopes they will realize their lack of knowledge and maybe embrace Dr. Wright's approach. I recommend this book to anyone in the workforce, not just maintenance and reliability.

I was fortunate enough to be able to work for Nate multiple times. Nate was an incredible mentor to me. As a young man aspiring to be an engineer, I cannot thank Nate enough for what he has taught me. I witnessed Nate develop programs and processes that not only benefited equipment and the company, but also the employees. With great leadership skills, experience, knowledge, and certifications; Nate is a man that pushes to accomplish goals which involve everyone around him. Still being in school unsure of where my career is headed, Nate helped formulate some thought on my future. Not everything is taught in the classroom, the rest is something that comes from years of experience and hands on work. Many lessons from Nate will be carried on and hopefully implemented wherever I end up. I can thank Nate for playing such a huge role in shaping how I look and think about lubrication and maintenance reliability. This book is a great read for young, soon-to-be engineers.

I just finished reading this book. I have over 20 years in maintenance and have seen many of the same issues Dr. Wright talks about in his book. I agree that leadership is killing the skilled trades. When I started out I was lucky to work for a Maintenance Manager who had risen through the ranks. There was not much he did not know. The journeymen who helped me through my apprenticeship were also experienced and knowledgeable. Now I am one of those senior journeyman, but since I do not have an engineering degree, I cannot move up into a titled position. Notice I do not say leadership position. My supervisors and managers have no hands-on experience. Their engineering degrees do not make them someone I can go to when stumped. If the few of us with experience cannot figure it out we have to call in experts (people with more experience). As the experience guys leave they take the only knowledge with them. Dr. Wright is exactly right in this book. Senior leaders need to wake up and realize that education is a plus but should not be what they seek. Experience is the true education and without it I agree the end is near. Thank you, Dr. Wright, for writing down what the others who write these books are not able to. Either they are afraid to say it or because they are examples of it.

This book was very straightforward with the issues Dr. Nathan Wright recognized through years of experience which is all encompassing. Author's experience from working on equipment to maintenance manager for large companies and tremendous leadership skills makes this book a must read for anyone involved in maintenance, engineering and management. Being a Certified Lubrication Specialist it is refreshing Dr.Nathan Wright recognized the true value of not just the application of lubricants but also premium quality products and support provided by supplier will make a tremendous impact on overall reliability. He covers complacency as another downfall. Many take this easy path, miss opportunities, and die on the vine prematurely. It is written in a simple straightforward format anyone can understand. Don't be reactive get your copy today.

If I had one word to describe this book it would be "practical". Unlike so many books you see today that are filled with frustrating "fluff", in The Death of Reliability, Nathan Wright literally conducts a cover-to-cover brain dump of practical wisdom. I read a lot of books, but I'm rarely compelled to write a book review. Here's what I especially like about the book:His focus on "blocking and tackling". If you don't get lubrication, installation and contamination control right, reliability will not follow.His discussion and recommendations on working with and managing vendors and consultants.Dozens of potential pitfalls and minefields he points out. It's obvious he's taken his lumps and learned from them.

I just finished this book and Nathan is spot on with his view of what it takes to have a good Reliability program.This is a must read for anyone involved with Reliability in the work place.He has spent the time in the field working on this process so he knows first hand how it works.Nathan takes it back to basics on what is needed to put a good program in place in any process plant.

To be honest I thought this book would be a boring read but by the time I had read thru the first chapter I found myself wanting to read more. The writer did not take the road so many authors like this take. They want you to feel they are right and you are wrong in your thinking. Dr Wright writes in a way that gets you to thinking about where you can make changes and what you already know works but needs tweaked a little. I was very impressed with his honesty throughout the book. Can not wait to read his next book.

Both books have at their core a story of remarkable scientific/mathematic achievement, overlooked because of gender, largely forgotten (until now) as others took credit. But it is so much more, so rich in its account of not only an extraordinary woman, but the time in which she lived, two World Wars and her central role in both, the incredible marriage that gave birth to modern American cryptanalysis, that I think it deserves to be evaluated on its own.Even in the hands of a merely serviceable writer, it would be an enjoyable read. But Fagone elevates the story, weaving it into as rich a tapestry as you could hope for. Secondary characters jump from the page just as much as Elizebeth and her husband William; little details transport you to the small, smoke-filled rooms where Elizebeth and her tiny team toiled in obscurity in defense of the country. Fagone firmly establishes Elizebeth Friedman's place in our history, and not only gives her her due, but demands that we reevaluate what we thought we knew about the wars, and the origins of America's intelligence services (nearly all of them have her fingerprints on them), and the people who are given credit for critical milestones in the country's history.This is a magnificent, memorable, important book.

But who did know that his wife, née Elizebeth Smith, was his equal in cryptographic skills? She created a Coast Guard cryptographic team, broke an Enigma without any help from Bletchley Park, helped expose many Prohibition-era gangs and Nazi spy networks in South America during WWII and worked in tandem with William during WWI. She is as much part of cryptographic history as her husband is.This is her history in that book, I highly recommended it.I knew she was very good but I didn't know she was that good. Thanks to the author for the book, loved it.

When Richard Nixon asked Chou En-Lai in 1972 about the impact of the French Revolution, the Chinese Premier famously said, "It's too early to tell." That terse response is generally understood to illustrate the Chinese ability to take the long view of history. But it might be more accurate to regard it as reflecting the constraints on those who write history. Historians can only work with available records: there is no history without documentary evidence. And sometimes decades, even centuries pass before the most crucial evidence comes to light.In fact, ironically, the exchange between Nixon and Chou reflects a misunderstanding that drives the point home even more strongly: they were both referring to the events of 1968, not 1789. Only now, much later, once a diplomat present at the scene clarified the exchange, can historians accurately interpret what the two men meant.There are few areas in which the unavailability of documentary evidence has been more telling than in the history of espionage in the 20th century. Only in recent years have the archives of the CIA, the KGB, MI6, the NSA, and other leading intelligence agencies opened widely enough for us to understand what really took place in the world of espionage in World War II and the Cold War. (Doubtless, some explosive documents are still locked away and won't surface until later in this century, if ever.) And there is no more dramatic example of how what has passed for history has misled us than what we have been taught about the FBI's role in counterespionage in the 1920s and 30s (combating rumrunners and smugglers) and in the 1940s (catching Nazi spies).Working with recently declassified files from the World War II era as well as long-ignored archival records and contemporary press reports and interviews, journalist Jason Fagone has brought to light at last the astonishing story of Elizebeth Smith Friedman and her husband, William Friedman. (Yes, her first name is spelled with three e's.) As Fagone shows in his beautifully written story of this surpassingly brilliant couple, The Woman Who Smashed Codes: A True Story of Love, Spies, and the Unlikely Heroine Who Outwitted America's Enemies, the Friedmans may well have been the most important 20th-century American codebreakers, and quite possibly the best and most successful in the world.William Friedman is celebrated in cryptology circles as the man who broke the Japanese military code called Purple. "MAGIC became the top-secret moniker for these Japanese decryptions . . . MAGIC led directly to bombs falling on imperial ships at Midway," the turning point of the war in the Pacific.Fagone notes, "Today historians of cryptology believe that in terms of sheer, sweaty brilliance, the breaking of Purple is a feat on par with Alan Turing's epiphanies about how to organize successful attacks on German Enigma codes." However, independently, before the US and Britain's Bletchley Park were collaborating on the effort, Elizebeth Friedman broke not one but three different types of Enigma machines. Fagone makes abundantly clear that the two were at least equal in ability. In fact Elizebeth may have been just a bit smarter. (William always insisted she was.)"William Friedman is . . . widely considered to be the father of the National Security Agency," Fagone writes. But both he and Elizebeth came to loathe the practices of the agency not long after its formation in 1952. It's very likely they would be scandalized by the indiscriminate collection of information about civilians by today's NSA.As Fagone notes, "Elizebeth and William Friedman unscrambled thousands of messages spanning two world wars, prying loose secrets about smuggling networks, gangsters, organized crime, foreign armies, and fascism. They also invented new techniques that transformed the science of secret writing, known as cryptology." Although today Elizebeth isn't nearly as famous as her husband, that was by no means always the case. During the 1930s, she become a celebrity for her work against rumrunners and other smugglers and gangsters during the Depression. The public attention halted when she was enlisted by the Coast Guard for a top-secret effort to identify the extensive Nazi spy network in South America—work at which she and her team were extraordinarily successful. Their efforts led to the dismantling of the Nazi network well before the end of the war. However, J. Edgar Hoover claimed the success for the FBI, ignoring their efforts, and he was able to get away with it because he had become so powerful. "It's not quite true that history is written by the winners," Fagone writes. "It's written by the best publicists on the winning team."The Woman Who Smashed Codes is an astonishing story that simply has to be read to be believed. His principal subject, Elizebeth Friedman, was an extraordinary woman he refers to more than once as a genius. (The evidence is there.) From 1920-1930, Elizebeth worked for the Coast Guard in deciphering codes sent by bootleggers and drug smugglers. Many were arrested and convicted based on both her evidence and testimony. During WWII, she deciphered radio codes, especially from Nazi agents working in South America. Her husband worked for the OSS and developed both cypher machines and code manuals. He was the breaker of the Japanese Red Code while she broke the Nazi Enigma Code. Mrs. Friedman swore an oath never to reveal what she had done during the wars. Thanks to the diligence of Jason Fagone, archives in the Marshall Library bring to light the work of this American heroine. Though the title is too long and the portion on George Fabyan and his Riverbank Laboratories a bit tedious, the rest of the book reads like a fascinating spy novel. Yet, this is a work of history which finally gives credit to a woman who lived in the shadow of her brilliant husband, but through her own superior capabilities, served her nation tirelessly on the cryptic battle front.

I have decided that Marcus Aurealis is my actual father, and Socrates is my great uncle and Thales is my grand father. I realize this sounds nutty to read but I honestly feel more in common with these thinkers then the absent XY chromosome donor.

I don't know who did the translation for this one but I found it very difficult to follow. This prompted me to look around and I found another translation by George Long (Thoughts of Marcus Aurelius Antoninus 1862). Even though it's not a recent translation, Long's version is often easier to understand. Compare the translations of the first paragraph for example:This version:Of my grandfather Verus I have learned to be gentle and meek, and to refrain from all anger and passion. From the fame and memory of him that begot me I have learned both shamefastness and manlike behaviour. Of my mother I have learned to be religious, and bountiful; and to forbear, not only to do, but to intend any evil; to content myself with a spare diet, and to fly all such excess as is incidental to great wealth. Of my great-grandfather, both to frequent public schools and auditories, and to get me good and able teachers at home; and that I ought not to think much, if upon such occasions, I were at excessive charges.George Long's version:From my grandfather Verus I learned good morals and the government of my temper. From the reputation and remembrance of my father, modesty and a manly character. From my mother, piety and beneficence, and abstinence, not only from evil deeds, but even from evil thoughts; and further, simplicity in my way of living, far removed from the habits of the rich. From my great-grandfather, not to have frequented public schools, and to have had good teachers at home, and to know that on such things a man should spend liberally.Having said this however, it's still worth comparing both translations which are free on the Kindle.

I cannot stress enough that the sagacity of this book is beyond what I have ever read. Definitely a must-read and a must-live-by.

He took the title of Augustus after the death of his adopted father, Antoninus Pius, the adopted son of the late Emperor Hadrian.However Marcus Aurelius had tried to pass on the emperorship, for he prefered a much more simple philosophic lifestyle. He accepted the honor with the sole demand that Lucius Verus, his adopted brother, would share the seat with him.Sharing his seat of power is the one move that summarizes Marcus Aurelius’s entire life; the fear of power and the duty embedded in him through his interest in Stoicism, a philosophy that grounds itself on self-restraint, reason, and fate.His work is a reflection of his life, and the words inscribed in Meditations are the product of his own thoughts and his own experiences.
