About the Author

Cris Maloney is the author of Field Hockey: Understanding the Game, JUMP IN! A Beginner’s Guide To Field Hockey Umpiring, Middle School Field Hockey Rules, and Field Hockey: The Beginner’s Guide. Mr. Maloney began playing field hockey while in college, where he became a nationally certified umpire in 1977, after success as a Track & Field at Moorestown High School, Moorestown, NJ (he was a 1975 All American). In the 1980s, Maloney founded New Jersey’s Garden State Games Field Hockey Event, served as an assistant coach to two undefeated, gold medal field hockey teams in United States Olympic Committee national sports festivals, attended an Olympic Solidarity Coaching seminar offered by the International Olympic Committee where he presented his paper titled Field Hockey: The First 30-Minutes, and began doing play-by-play and color announcing at international field hockey games. Later he became a nationally certified Level II Umpire Coach. Always an innovator, in 2003 Maloney was the first field hockey assigner to use web-based technology to assign umpires to field hockey games. He was the first, in 2005, to recommend, use, and supervise the use of walkie-talkies during high school games. In 2013 he organized the first Hockey5s league in the USA. In 2014, he created a version of field hockey he calls Super6s – which is a combination of the indoor and outdoor games that favors simplified rules and continuous action that can be played by children and adults. Maloney is the owner of UmpireHockey.com, and produces on online rules course for players, coaches, and umpires. Maloney runs programs to introduce field hockey to boys and girls in central New Jersey.

One of my photographs is in this book. Cris said he wanted a photo of a goalkeeper and asked me if I would take one of my son. When the book came out, he sent me one and asked me to post a review. I'm happy that Cris used the photo but, I'm sharing what I think of the book as a parent of four athletes and as a teacher. I like Field Hockey: The Beginner's Guide because it is a concise and easy to read manual for understanding the basic play and rules of field hockey. It is a good resource for the novice player (and parent) who both want to understand the game. Speaking from experience, my own parents never came to any of my high school games because they were so confused by the whistle calls (many more stoppages back in that day!) and didn't understand the sport. I would have loved for them to have a resource like this to better understand how field hockey is played! And being that it has evolved and changed since my playing years, I've learned from the book as well. Highly recommend it as a resource for any field hockey library.

I received a copy of this book from Cris because he used a photograph of mine, and he asked me to give an honest review. Cris and I are both umpires, and we became friends through an online field hockey discussion forum. I have 4 children that play at an elite level, so field hockey has been an important facet of our lives for many years.I wish I had a copy of this book when my players first started out! It's an easy read, yet comprehensive enough to really get started. I even learned a few things I didn't know. Also, there are some great links mentioned in the book that lead to other helpful field hockey information.

Cris had sent me a copy of this book because he used one of my photographs on the back cover. I had taken the picture back in 2017 when Cris was coaching two young umpires at a tournament. He asked me to give an honest review of the book. I’m not sharing as a photographer but as a father of 2 field hockey players. As I was once new to the sport at least 9 years ago. I have grown to know and love this sport for many reasons. There’s still lots I don’t know but have been learning as I just glance through the book. I’m not a big book reader but I’m excited for more I can learn as i keep reading this book.

Like its color counterpart, this black and white version hits all the important topics for the field hockey enthusiast. Priced right for the young field hockey player looking to begin a successful field hockey experience.

This is the B&W edition of Field Hockey: The Beginner's Guide. The color edition (Field Hockey: The Beginner's Guide: Full Color Edition), as I type this, has many 5-star reviews. The B&W edition has the exact same content as full color edition but the pages are in B&W rather than color. The B&W edition cost less than the full color edition.

Great book, especially for newcomers to field hockey. Photos are great, well worth the small price!

This is a very nice book for beginners. My son loves this book so much.

I received a copy of this book from Cris because several of my photographs were used. My field hockey knowledge is limited to my daughter playing jr. high field hockey as well as what I pick up while photographing the sport here in Central PA and photographing many events for USA Field Hockey. I'm sure this book will give me a better understanding of the sport I spend so much time photographing.

I am 8 months into my nursing career, and starting out as an ICU nurse has been challenging. I glanced through this book when one of my coworkers left hers floating around the unit and I knew I had to have my own copy. I love it! It is an excellent resource. I bring all sorts of papers and reference material with me to work at various times, but I *always* have this book, because it is small but packed with helpful information. I have started writing additional notes in it so it will eventually be the only thing I have to keep with me. It has been invaluable to me, and I find myself wishing I had the time and mental energy to sit down and read it all the way through; I know I'd learn a lot!Update: I've still use this book for reference and I've been an ICU nurse for almost 3 years. I have been off work for six months due to pregnancy and maternity leave, and when I go back to work next week I can guarantee I will be referring to this book to refresh my memory of things.

There are many positive aspects of this book but I found it lacking in a few areas. One is that it is advertised as in color; being that I am a visual learner this is one of the things that enticed me to buy this book instead of others so I was disappointed to find that the colors were only black and orange. In addition, there is a EKG table but no actual strips (in my opinion, most people I know would prefer to see the actual strip as an example). The meds are listed in alphabetical order which I found helpful but I was surprised to see that no information was given as to how to titrate the medications; side effects are not listed either. For being a quick reference book, I was hoping for tabs or indentations for fast access but these are also lacking.

Definitely not a book you sit down to read cover to cover. It is a reference book that goes into enough detail to cover the point. Worth keeping in your bag for the reference it is.

I work in the field of respiratory care. For the last 34 years I have had the opportunity to work in many critical care settings, such as adult, neonatal and pediatric intensive care units. As a Respiratory Therapist, cardiac and hemodynamics are high on the list of our expertise. I recommend this book to any medical professional who needs a good review, and even to learn from.

Old ER nurse here who just transferred to ICU after working 20 yrs in the ED. I thought I knew a lot but am finding out that I don't know anything lol. This book is a great little gem to give me a quick refresher on conditions not seen too often in the ED (ARDS, for instance). The only complaint is that the print is very small, but if it were bigger the book wouldn't fit in my hadbag, so it's a small complaint.

This has become my go to reference guide for work. I work in the Medical/Surgical/Transplant ICU, and every question I have had so far, is in this book. It's small enough to carry around, but full of information. I cannot say enough good things about this book!!!

I paid $40 + dollars for a book that was in quite poor condition. It was not in the condition described . I am using this book because I NEED it for my class....but I definitely got ripped off on the price. Grossly overpriced for the condition

Kimberlin, MD, FAAP is the Principal Investigator for the Collaborative Antiviral Study Group (CASG), an international network of pediatric academic medical centers that evaluates antiviral therapeutics in rare diseases with a large unmet medical need, including neonatal herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections, congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) disease, congenital Zika infection, neonatal and infantile influenza infection, and neonatal enteroviral sepsis syndrome. Studies conducted by the CASG have led to new drug indications and label changes for acyclovir, valganciclovir, and oseltamivir, and non-CASG studies conducted by Dr. Kimberlin also have led to label changes for valacyclovir.Dr. Kimberlin is Editor of the 2018 AAP Report of the Committee on Infectious Diseases (Red Book), and was the editor for the 2015 edition as well. Operative Dictations in General and Vascular Surgery, Second Edition is intended to teach residents the principles of succinct and precise operative dictations for a wide spectrum of surgical procedures. Designed as a portable resource, the book provides typical dictations to guide the resident. Comprised of 226 procedures, this new edition comprises the majority of procedures commonly performed by general and vascular surgeons. For each procedure, a list of common indications is given. This list covers 95% of the situations in which a particular procedure will be used. A list of essential steps follows. These can be used to mentally rehearse the procedure before it is performed. The next heading, Note these technical variations, introduces a list that is intended to prompt the surgeon for particular things to note and dictate within the template. A list of possible complications that are typically associated with that particular surgical procedure follows. Finally, a template operative dictation is provided. Common opening and terminating sequences (for example, how to enter and close the abdomen) in all laparotomy dictations are included.The volume has two primary objectives. First, it is designed to serve as a source of model operative dictations that may be individualized and used as templates. Second, it is intended as an aide-memoir, giving the surgeon a short list of pertinent information about each procedure. Ample space is provided to allow each surgeon to add notes. By reviewing this introductory material before scrubbing on a procedure, the trainee surgeon will enter the operating room better prepared to participate actively and to learn as much as possible. This questionnaire is rather silly, because an attempt to analyze the characters would eliminate the silent acceptance and understanding of them that comes from reading. The author writes so well, no analysis is necessary. They are fictional characters, not real. To equate them with real people is not the correct perception. I didn't know anything about this book when I purchased it - I just heard it was good. At first, I thought it was going to be a dark, depressing book about a man who had lost his purpose in life. Instead, it turned out to be a warm and touching book about a man who had lost his purpose in life ... but found it again through a group of unlikely people, circumstances, and a Cat Annoyance. Heart-warming without being cheesy and sentimental.

It was really entertaining. I really laughed at how he judged everyone by the kind of car they drove.

The wife read it for book club and loved it. A book about a guy who keeps trying to kill himself and failing sounds odd to me, but she said it was actually a sweet book.

Everyone in my book club liked it except for me. I couldn’t see it.

I have recommended this book to several friends and my book club. Haven't heard of anyone not liking it.
