Beware that this is the first edition, and there is a newer second edition published in 1994. The product description is for the second edition, which this book is not. The description is misleading and is being used to sell an old book. Accidental? Hard to believe. Get the second edition, not this one.

Admittedly, this one tends to be a bit pricey. But, the content is pure gold for any programmer. Nowhere is the Prolog paradigm better conveyed than here. And, it is of little value to you if you attempt to learn prolog with a mindset of some other language. Prolog is unique and demands a unique way of looking at computer programming in general. It is dated a bit in that it does not cover all the latest developments in Prolog/AI research but no other Prolog books provide the foundational understanding that it does. Get this one for a solid foundation and then build on it with others. See my listmania list of AI Language books for suggestions of followup titles.

After Clocksin and Mellish this is the book to get. It develops the fundamental ideas of the core language, and, continuing in the same style of proper language use and applied computer science avoids being esoteric as it pushes the reader to higher order programming naturally. Recommended! Bought mine second hand in excellent condition. Shame it's not available on Kindle.

This, to me, is one of the 4 best books on computer programming. Unfortunately, it is hard. Not because the book is poorly written - it is like a wonderful story, but because understanding how to think declaratively after being taught something like C or Java is like someone giving you a pair of wings when you're a mudfish.Thinking declaratively changes how you think about problems and how you write code. It's a career changing experience. This book leads the way.Top 4:* Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs (Sussman, Abelson)* The Art of Prolog by Sterling/Shapiro* Introduction to Algorithms by Cormen, etc.* Concepts, Techniques, and Models of Computer Programming by Van Roy and Haridi

This is a great book; very clear writing and descriptions. To be honest, I haven't given Prolog, or this book, the time and effort that it deserves - whenever I need to quickly knock a script together I keep falling back to my imperative tendencies, frustrated but knowing that there is likely to be a more elegant declarative solution if I just persevered. I would love to have the time to sit down and methodically work through this book. I believe that I would gain a lot from doing so. Instead I've usually dipped in, late at night when half asleep, to admire the elegance of declarative programming - but this has helped me keep the faith that programming can be an elegant and thoughtful exercise. One day I will find the time to study and ponder Sterling's wonderful work (and then I will rewrite this review with insightful comments and witty rejoinders).

A book to learn logic programming

Book arrived perfectly.

"The Art of Prolog" tries to be top notch: Beautifully crafted book, clear partition in four parts (Logic Programs, The Prolog Language, Advanced Prolog Programming Techniques, Applications), and most programs are very beautiful.Anyhow the authors often try to explain the trivial sometimes even the shallow, then they often do not spent much effort in explaining the difficult. There is an unusual large amount of references to other parts of this book: backward and worse forward. The choice to explain first logic programming and then Edinburgh Prolog as an approximate implementation is especially unfortunate in this respect: A high level of redundancy separated by an entire book part with references to each other. Most of the small programs are very beautiful and true gems. Though the reader should not foul herself, the development of most programs did last many years of brilliant people. I did not get a feel for the difficulty of developing a reasonable prolog program on my own.I really liked the Background section at the end of each chapter: A very sound view to the world around the book.If you are somewhat knowledgeable of the usual AI and CS problems, you will have a lot of pleasure to the elegant approach a prolog program can have to tackle many of them.

This romance is about a Scottish lass who loves and English Officer sent along the border lands to keep the peace and stop incursions. So the young lovers💘 must keep their relationship secret throughout most of the book. The book was well written with good editing.

Enjoyed the characters in the book.

Kidnapped Highland Bride by Bridget Freya is the third in the Ladies of Dunmore Scottish Romance series. Sadly I have to report that this is not the best of the series. Richard meets Adeline at her friend, Grace's wedding to a British officer who had found his Scottish roots and fallen in love. Richard, his friend is a lieutenant in the Hanoverian army fighting against the Jacobites. They have a pleasant evening and them part ways. He only has a pass for a week and part of that is gone. They meet next at another wedding, one where a group of rogue soldiers has randomly attacked and is killing people. He manages to rescue Adeline before she is hurt and one thing leads to another. Both of them realize this attraction is not meant to be long term. He returns her to Dunmore and he returns to his camp. All of these books are pushing the envelope but this is the worst. Totally unrealistic and farfetched, it muddies the waters considerably to get the lovers back together. The characters are basically repeats of the several books, not particularly original. It was fun to read but I spent far too much time rolling my eyes.I received a free ARC of Kidnapped Highland Bride in exchange for a fair and honest review.

This is the third book in The Ladies of Dunmore series. You don't have to read them all in order to enjoy this book, but I think you will enjoy it more if you do, because some of the characters appear in other books and it is fun to watch them develop from one book to another. This book is the historical romance of a Scottish lass and a English officer. It has everything you want in a love story. There is love at first sight, danger, suspense, villains, and of course, lots of steamy romance. You won't be able to stop reading until you get to the end and find out if they get their happily ever after! I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of this book.

Adeline and Richard meet at the wedding of Grace and Douglas. It is love at first sight for Richard. For Adeline, it a tingly feeling, one she has never felt before. As Richard leaves after the wedding festivities, he wonders if he will ever see her again. A few weeks later, the unexpected happens. A wedding is taking place and Adeline and her friends are under attack. The adventures begin as Richard and Adeline are suddenly thrown together. They have to get away from the attackers, but where do they go? Adeline discovers she has fallen for Richard, but their backgrounds are so different. He is a Hanoverian and English and she is a Jacobite and Scottish. And then there is the ambitious Camry, a kinsman to Adeline who plans to marry Adeline. Adeline faces emotional turmoil. How can she live a life with Richard whose ways are so very different from hers when life with Camry would be a life of comfort in her own homeland? Which one will she choose? Read to discover who and why she chooses one man over the other. I received this as an ARC book, and am not obligated to post a review for this book. The review and opinions expressed are my own.

Kidnapped Highland Bride by Bridget Freya was a story about and English Lieutenant Richard and a Scottish lass Adeline. They first met at the wedding of their best friends Douglas Warwick and Grace. The difference is Douglas is part Scottish. Richard was in awe of Adeline from the first moment he saw her. He asked her to dance but realized they could never be. As to not give the story away, he saves her when she was attending another wedding and the manor house was attacked by drunken English soldiers. He wasn’t part of that group and tried to stop it unsuccessfully. There isn’t a dull moment in this book and I enjoyed it.

Adeline MacGowan and Arabella were admiring the musicians at Grace’s wedding to the former Hanoverian general, Douglas Warwick. When Arabella walked away, a man who had been talking to Douglas walked toward her and asked her to dance. She could tell from his accent he was an Englishman. He introduced himself as Lieutenant Richard Holloway, a Hanoverian soldier, which makes him an enemy of her clan. But they fall in love and have many difficulties to face. Her duty to family demands that she marry a man from another clan who doesn’t love her and would treat her badly. Which is stronger – duty to family or being true to your heart? This is a wonderful book with so many twists and turns. The story line takes us through danger as well as romance, well-paced and very intriguing for the reader. The characters are very well developed and hold the reader’s respect. You won’t want to miss this one. It is definitely a joy to read!

When Lieutenant Richard Holloway travelled into the heart of Jacobean Territory for his friend's wedding he did not expect to meet the woman he would fall in love with and later marry. Adeline MacGowen was attracted to Richard but did not expect that he would be the one to rescue her from a group of British soldiers intent on laying siege to another Scottish wedding. After her rescue, the pair traveled through the night to return her to her uncle's care, their relationship growing into love and Richard's offer of marriage. There were many obstacles to overcome before their married life could begin. I liked the romance of this story, rich in details of this time in Scottish history, the drama and suspense, all added to the story.I received a free ARC copy of this book and have voluntarily read and honestly reviewed this book.

Review

“Mahaffey guides us through more than a century of atomic research, including misadventures with radioactive elixirs and long-forgotten accidents. The compelling tales unravel like slow-motion horror stories.” - NATURE“From clueless hunters wandering into caves teeming with radon-222, to fervid dreams of nuclear jets, and reactors bucking like steeds unused to human contact, Mahaffey keeps things appropriately dramatic. Truly valuable.” - Newsweek“Mahaffey employs his extensive knowledge of nuclear engineering to produce a volume that is by turns alarming, thought-provoking, humorous, and always fascinating.” - Publishers Weekly, STARRED REVIEW

#89,104 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

This was not the book I expected when I purchased it. I was expecting an authoritative, well researched, well documented treatise on the history of nuclear accidents. It was certainly that. But I was also expecting a dry, pedantic, academic, formal, and boring book that I was determined to slog thorough because I wanted to understand the topic. In a story that traces its plot from a wrecked 2-10-0 decapod steam engine in north Georgia in 1954 to a massive hydrogen explosion at Fukushima Daiichi, Japan in 2011, the human story is always front and center. Don’t misunderstand, Mahaffey understands the technology intimately and he describes the technical details with an engineers precision, but he also understands that it is the interface between the human and the machine where the true story is told, and time-and-time again, where the culprit of tragedy is to be found.Although the title makes it sound like an academic textbook, it reads more like a Sebastian Junger or Jon Krakauer adventure story. One where when you breathlessly complete it, you will be chagrined to realize you just may have read a textbook. There are two threads of striking similarities running through these stories. The first is how incaution led to so many of these accidents. At first, this seems surprising given the dangerous nature of the processes and materials being handled. But it reminds me of a conversation I had with a friend. We are both rock climbers and used to a certain element of risk. We were discussing a climber who was well known for incredibly difficult climbs without a rope and I suggested he was somehow fundamentally different from the rest of us. My friend disagreed and offered that each time we take a risk and have a positive outcome, our expectation of a positive outcome increases and conversely, our vigilance decreases. It is an interesting idea and one that highlights the imperativeness of following well designed safety procedures and how there can be little or no tolerance for mavericks here. The second striking thread was how many accidents were due to operators failing to follow procedures or mistrusting measurements because they followed their “gut instincts”. This thread might also seem to highlight the imperativeness of following well designed safety procedures and how there can be little or no tolerance for mavericks, but it less clear as we really have no good data on whether and how many accidents were averted by similar actions. This is a story of great tragedy and sometimes great catastrophe. It is a story that doesn't shy away from telling the, often painful, stories of the very real human beings at the center of the events. Whether the result of ignorance, youthful exuberance, hubris, heroism, or luck, the pictures painted in these words are fitting testimonials to the tragic victims of these events. But this is ultimately an optimistic story. It tells the tale of a completely new technology from its earliest inception to the present day through the lens of adversity. But the ultimate sense one is left with is a sense of triumph. If there is any pessimism, it is from the nagging sensation that what should be one of humanities greatest triumphs may be abandoned out of misplaced fear.

I found this to be a great read! The author clearly knows what he is talking about. He takes us through the chronology of nuclear accidents, starting with an understanding of what radioactive elements are in the first place and then describing a whole series of nuclear accidents, from the relatively minor and early ones to the major ones (like Three Mile Island, Chernobyl, and Fukushima Daiichi). The author describes the nature of these accidents in language that is readily understandable by those of us without a Ph.D. in physics. He also enables the reader to understand how nuclear reactors work and what can (and did) go wrong with them. Some very interesting photos are included with the book (I have the ebook version). When I was done reading it for the day, I was always eager to pick the book up again and continue. It was highly enjoyable, and I would heartily recommend it.

As an ex-Navy submariner and Engineering Watch Supervisor, I really enjoyed this book. I trained on the A1W prototype in Idaho (1972) and spent a good deal of time on the other 2 plants (S5G and S1W). SL1 was a scary rumor at the time and the only teachable moment I remember is that we needed to always believe our instrumentation, especially with a reactor accident or potential contamination event. I think this came from the first responders at SL1 not believing their counters when they first rolled up. We had to live in Idaho Falls and commute by a bus just about every day. We drove right past where some of the stories in this book unfolded. Brought back a lot of memories. The boat I was on had a few situations that I was disappointed were not mentioned in the book. She was a very old boat, since retired with her reactor compartment buried out at the Hanford site. We had a couple primary to secondary leaks in our steam generators, as well as unexplained shield tank overflows while at sea.The primary leaks were first seen as iodine isotopes at the air ejectors on the main condensers. We had to isolate the engineering spaces and lived in our EAB's for 3 weeks limping back to Pearl. At the time there were a number of incidents across the fleet, per the grapevine, leading to a crew on another boat refusing to go to sea. I was hoping to find where I could contact the author. Rickover's nuclear navy did not have as spotless of a record as book seemed to imply at some points. Anyway, very good book, especially if you lived some of it.

This is a real page turner. I had no idea so many accidents had happened. For me the most fascinating, and scary incidents, are those that occurred in reprocessing labs, where just pouring material from one container to another with a different shape creates a critical mass. Parts of it are quite technical, and requires some background in physics, but overall its very accessible. The title of the book is a bit misleading, because in order to cover accidents the author presents a huge amount of background material explaining how a broad range of nuclear facilities were designed and supposed to work, in order to explain how things went wrong. This made the book a great read for the technically curious. I've only read one other book that installed equal enthusiasm: The invention that changed the world by Robert Buderi, a history of the development of microwave radar and the science that arose from it,

Review

“Anyone can grasp Mr. Kurzweil’s main idea: that mankind’s technological knowledge has been snowballing, with dizzying prospects for the future. The basics are clearly expressed. But for those more knowledgeable and inquisitive, the author argues his case in fascinating detail . . . . The Singularity Is Near is startling in scope and bravado.”—Janet Maslin, The New York Times“Filled with imaginative, scientifically grounded speculation . . . . The Singularity Is Near is worth reading just for its wealth of information, all lucidly presented . . . . [It’s] an important book. Not everything that Kurzweil predicts may come to pass, but a lot of it will, and even if you don’t agree with everything he says, it’s all worth paying attention to.”—The Philadelphia Inquirer“[An] exhilarating and terrifyingly deep look at where we are headed as a species . . . . Mr. Kurzweil is a brilliant scientist and futurist, and he makes a compelling and, indeed, a very moving case for his view of the future.”—The New York Sun“Compelling.”—San Jose Mercury News“Kurzweil links a projected ascendance of artificial intelligence to the future of the evolutionary process itself. The result is both frightening and enlightening . . . . The Singularity Is Near is a kind of encyclopedic map of what Bill Gates once called ‘the road ahead.’”—The Oregonian“A clear-eyed, sharply-focused vision of the not-so-distant future.”—The Baltimore Sun“This book offers three things that will make it a seminal document. 1) It brokers a new idea, not widely known, 2) The idea is about as big as you can get: the Singularity—all the change in the last million years will be superceded by the change in the next five minutes, and 3) It is an idea that demands informed response. The book’s claims are so footnoted, documented, graphed, argued, and plausible in small detail, that it requires the equal in response. Yet its claims are so outrageous that if true, it would mean . . . well . . . the end of the world as we know it, and the beginning of utopia. Ray Kurzweil has taken all the strands of the Singularity meme circulating in the last decades and has united them into a single tome which he has nailed on our front door. I suspect this will be one of the most cited books of the decade. Like Paul Ehrlich’s upsetting 1972 book Population Bomb, fan or foe, it’s the wave at epicenter you have to start with.”—Kevin Kelly, founder of Wired“Really, really out there. Delightfully so.”—Businessweek.com“Stunning, utopian vision of the near future when machine intelligence outpaces the biological brain and what things may look like when that happens . . . . Approachable and engaging.”—the unofficial Microsoft blog“One of the most important thinkers of our time, Kurzweil has followed up his earlier works . . . with a work of startling breadth and audacious scope.”—newmediamusings.com“An attractive picture of a plausible future.”—Kirkus Reviews“Kurzweil is a true scientist—a large-minded one at that . . . . What’s arresting isn’t the degree to which Kurzweil’s heady and bracing vision fails to convince—given the scope of his projections, that’s inevitable—but the degree to which it seems downright plausible.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review)“[T]hroughout this tour de force of boundless technological optimism, one is impressed by the author’s adamantine intellectual integrity . . . . If you are at all interested in the evolution of technology in this century and its consequences for the humans who are creating it, this is certainly a book you should read.”—John Walker, inventor of Autodesk, in Fourmilab Change Log“Ray Kurzweil is the best person I know at predicting the future of artificial intelligence. His intriguing new book envisions a future in which information technologies have advanced so far and fast that they enable humanity to transcend its biological limitations—transforming our lives in ways we can’t yet imagine.”—Bill Gates“If you have ever wondered about the nature and impact of the next profound discontinuities that will fundamentally change the way we live, work, and perceive our world, read this book. Kurzweil’s Singularity is a tour de force, imagining the unimaginable and eloquently exploring the coming disruptive events that will alter our fundamental perspectives as significantly as did electricity and the computer.”—Dean Kamen, recipient of the National Medal of Technology, physicist, and inventor of the first wearable insulin pump, the HomeChoice portable dialysis machine, the IBOT Mobility System, and the Segway Human Transporter“One of our leading AI practitioners, Ray Kurzweil, has once again created a ‘must read’ book for anyone interested in the future of science, the social impact of technology, and indeed the future of our species. His thought-provoking book envisages a future in which we transcend our biological limitations, while making a compelling case that a human civilization with superhuman capabilities is closer at hand than most people realize.”—Raj Reddy, founding director of the Robotics Institute at Carnegie Mellon University and recipient of the Turing Award from the Association for Computing Machinery“Ray’s optimistic book well merits both reading and thoughtful response. For those like myself whose views differ from Ray’s on the balance of promise and peril, The Singularity Is Near is a clear call for a continuing dialogue to address the greater concerns arising from these accelerating possibilities.”—Bill Joy, cofounder and former chief scientist, Sun Microsystems

#39,684 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I remember several years ago telling people I had just subjected myself to the scariest book of my life after reading one about the supposedly inevitable nuclear implosion of Pakistan. Well, now I've found something that tops it, even though author Ray Kurzweil seems to imagine his book as a bolt of optimism. Anyone who has ever played around with the arithmetic of compounding and exponential growth knows how crazy the numbers get as growth feeds on itself. The phenomenon is quite real in the world, and it describes everything from viral epidemics to Warren Buffet's fortune. Kurzweil applies the exponential growth paradigm to the future of technology. He sees not only change itself accelerating, but the rate of change too, if you can go back to your high school calculus and wrap your mind around that stomach-churning concept. The math starts quickly approaching infinity, which is why it's so weird. "Singularity" is a common term-of-art among theoretical physicists, who apply it to a variety of seemingly irrational constructs, such as an infinitely large mass compressed towards an infinitely small point. Kurzweil co-opts the term for his own purpose here to mean the point in time where artificial intelligence starts exceeding human intelligence. Thereafter, it takes over its own programming and, being so powerful, does a better and better job of it. Because things are already moving so fast today, the accelerating rate of change means that Kurzweil's Singularity is closer than even optimists might imagine - hence the book's title. He projects it to occur somewhere in the middle of this century. Afterwards, nothing will ever again be the same. In physics, unimaginable things start happening at singularity points, like energy explosions within black holes. Following Kurzweil's Singularity, the most garish science fiction fantasies start becoming commonplace. The combination of genetics, nanotechnology and robotics - which he refers to collectively as GNR - will transform all aspects of human existence. He believes, for example, that nanobots released into a person's bloodstream, will facilitate a comprehensive (that is to say, 100%) map of that person, including genetic code and nervous system, that can be uploaded and downloaded at will onto new "substrates". In other words, robotic copies of human beings - body, mind, memories, and (one presumes) soul - can be made that will appear indistinguishable from the originals. And for that matter, those originals themselves can be re-shaped at will, giving us all the opportunity to become brilliant, strong, happy, and beautiful. Kurzweil tells us that artificial circuits replicating themselves at a molecular level will merge with the biological circuits that constitute our nervous systems, giving rise an "enhanced" human super-intelligence. Once this starts happening, what we now call the Internet will in effect become telepathic, giving these enhanced humans instantaneous access to all available knowledge and information as they fashion their brave new world. You see how explosive this gets? And it's just the beginning. Once the process gets underway, the evolving super-intelligence keeps expanding until it permeates the entire planet and, still accelerating, eventually the universe. Kurzweil suggests that movement though time-space "wormholes" should one day facilitate rapid travel beyond our own galaxy, taking the process literally everywhere. I realize that my amateur's survey of Kurzweil's thinking here makes him sound like a crank. However, let there be no mistake: he is an accomplished scientist and a highly sophisticated thinker. MIT-trained, he's an expert in artificial intelligence and has put his ideas into practice as a successful tech entrepreneur. Most of this book is not even devoted to prognostications, but to an in-depth review of research currently underway that lays the practical groundwork for virtually everything he talks about (except maybe the wormhole business). While he makes numerous leaps of faith in taking us from here to there, none of his forecasts represent sheer fantasy. He is an extremely good writer, and while staying true to what is in fact pretty complex science, describes it all in a way that makes it reasonably clear to lay readers. For all his hardcore materialism, Kurzweil also has a whimsical streak. Every 50 pages or so, he breaks up his text with imaginary light-hearted debates among himself (appearing as "Ray"), various historical figures - Darwin, Freud, etc. - and a person named "Molly", who seems to be a student. Molly is bright, curious, skeptical, and not in the least bit awed by Ray or the others. The thing about Molly is that she appears in two separate guises: Molly 2004 (the year this book was being written), and Molly 2104, which is of course well beyond the Singularity. One of Kurzweil's key forecasts is that future science will learn how to arrest and even reverse the aging process, allowing people more-or-less to live forever at whatever age they choose. So Molly has made it through the Singularity and returned as a still-young woman to speak about it from experience. Kurzweil is fully aware of the potential downside to his vision. He devotes one long chapter to what he calls "The Deeply Intertwined Promise and Peril of GNR". He devotes another even longer chapter to responding to critics, who have attacked his ideas from every possible perspective. While he treats most criticisms respectfully, in the end he largely dismisses them all. One partial exception and the one specific fear he himself does seem to harbor is of self-replicating nanobots. He and other scientists who seriously debate such stuff even have a short-hand term for this specter: The Grey Goo Problem. Were self-replication somehow to spin out of control, Kurzweil explains to us that in a matter of days it could, in theory, consume the Earth's entire biomass and reduce it to "grey goo". This is indeed a troubling prospect, since this endangered biomass includes all of us. Interestingly, the cluster of criticisms that he responds to most gently are those arising from a spiritualist perspective. In one of his imaginary debates with "Molly", she repeatedly asks "Ray" if he believes in God. Ray surprises by dodging the question every time rather than saying no. Badgered into a corner, he finally avers: "For the sake of your question, we can consider God to be the universe, and I said that I believe in the universe." This sounds suspiciously like a yes, albeit with a twist. He then goes on to explain how his entire vision can be described as a picture of the universe "waking up" as enhanced human intelligence pervades its many corners. Religious people of an unorthodox bent might be tempted to embrace this image as God's self-realization. Fundamentalists of every stripe, however, were they to take K's cosmology seriously at all, would view it with disgust as the self-realization of God's Opposite Number. For me, the most unnerving question that this book triggers is who will control these accelerating technologies. Reading through many passages of the book, I found it hard not hard to be thinking about Nazi scientists beavering away at the design of their Master Race, or North Korean labs re-programming the neural patterns of citizens lacking enthusiasm for Kim Jong-Un. Kurzweil seems to trust in the pragmatic good will of the scientific community, buttressed by regulation. However, not all scientists have good will, and he says nothing about who he supposes will regulate the regulators. I also find it hard to see what joy or challenge there could be in a world where machines or enhanced humans dominate everything. People choosing not to become "enhanced" would either have it forced upon them or face life as a sub-species. The line between utopia and dystopia here is pretty fuzzy, and I find it a little scary that Kurzweil doesn't seem to care. Maybe I've seen too many science fiction movies. All that aside, I highly recommend this book. Decades ago when I was in college I used to describe about every other book I read as "changing my life", as we said in the day. Nowadays, no book changes my life, although the best ones still move the needle for me. Whether I like it or not, this one has me looking at things a little differently than I did before.

Any review of this book would have to start off by emphasizing that it written by Ray Kurzweil, one of the leading electrical engineers, scientists and tinkerers of the latter 20th century and early 21st century. Not surprisingly, he has an incredibly in-depth knowledge of technology, especially with respect to electrical engineering, that he brings to the table in his book. He really, really knows his stuff. That is what gives this book its “meat”. For many, especially those not interested in technical discussions, this book is not recommended. For those who are interested in such a discussion this is a book that is very much worth reading. He makes projections involving computer processing power, human – machine interfacing, energy production, etc. that are all very well worth hearing and that are all made very well. He makes the argument, well based on his in-depth knowledge, that this technology will mark a radical departure not just from the point of technology but in terms of human history and even with respect to what it will mean to be human. He believes that human physiology and technology will so interface that humans will become more cyborg than human and that immortality (at least in the de facto sense) will be reached. All of these views are all well worth listening to, especially for those with a deep interest and/or background in technology. The book does have a number of problems however that need to be pointed out. One is that his views on AI depend almost entirely on brain emulation and reverse engineering. He does not examine other ways AI may develop that do not parallel the human brain. A second problem is that he ignores the economic incentives that would drive human – machinery fusion. To him, the mere availability of the technology means it will be adopted. In this reviewer’s opinion the main driver will be economic competition a la zero sum game theory. In this reviewer’s opinion the real driver will be economic competition. If one’s competitor’s have chips that enable instant memory recall or interfacing with the internet (or a future version of it) one will not be able to compete. Like it or not, for one’s economic survival, one will have to follow the path of becoming a cyborg (or more like one).A third problem is that there is little discussion on how technology will influence human institutions. It may be the case that technology will so undermine these or prevent new ones from emerging in which humans can interact with each other without destroying each other or even functioning effectively with each other. A fourth major problem with his book is that he views the human – machinery fusion that he is predicting in very glowing positive terms. Other authors, such as George Zarkadakis in his “in our image” believe this symbiosis will be what will eventually lead to humanity’s extinction. Another important weakness of the book is its very glowing view of the benefits of human “immortality” or, at the very least a vastly increased lifespan. He seems to forget that the increased lifespan of humanity will also lead to much longer lived Stalin or Maos. Imagine a world where degenerates like these can reign not 20 or 30 years but 100 or 200.Last but not least the most important weakness of the book is the fact that it ignores the very important role that death plays in the evolution of human history through paradigm shifts. Changes in human institutions and popularity held beliefs (i.e., religions, nationalism, secularism, the scientific method, etc.) occur primarily because the young, eventually, replaces the old. A vastly increased human lifespan, never mind immortality, would go very far in undermining this. Alfred Adler put it very eloquently in the following quote: "Death is really a great blessing for humanity, without it there could be no real progress. People who lived for ever would not only hamper and discourage the young, but they would themselves lack sufficient stimulus to be creative".

When used together Lexile measure help a reader find books at an appropriate level of challenge, and determine how well that reader will likely comprehend a text. When a Lexile text measure matches a Lexile reader measure, this is called a "targeted" reading experience. I delved into this in the 1980s. Some of this stuff just plain won't work and some of it is dazzlingly good.Be warned----procuring some of these chemicals and materials now WILL get you visited by the authority.Maybe just looking at it? I can't believe this stuff is still available...get it while you still can.

I first saw this book from a friend, in 1979, I was 14 yrs old. I knew then that I would NEVER see a book of this kind again! I committed as much as I could to memory! The tricks that I learned from that old, old manual served me well; as a Soldier during Desert Storm, we (my platoon) were always ahead of the rest/ fewest casualties.During OIF (contracted civilian) our 'crew' had the best record for lowest IED hits, thanks to the memories of the old book, not to mention a LOT of ex-military members in the mix.I can say that the ORIGINAL publication was FAR better, this Volume One, has been co-opted by the 'Big Guys.' They are disseminating old, useless pablum. Granted, it IS useful info, but outdated. If a person was interested.. . .Where are the old recipes to make LSD from Morning Glory seeds, the 'Nut Busters", bad nicotine,, 'Mace" before Capsaicin oil was a fad? etc, etc. . .This, although good, is NOT the original publication!I KNEW after 9-11 EVERYTHING changed, I suppose this is one of them. . . .

Great book. Very hands on material. I bought this for my husband and he loved it. He is a prepper so this fit in with his interest. You can't just buy one volume. you really need all the volumes. They are full of information. I would recommend buying it for someone into prepping.

Bought it as a gift but flicking thru it I realized how out of date the content and format is now and decided to keep it rather than insult the recipient. Was probably great in its day but times move on.

This book is a keeper. It's kind of sad it isn't a pocket or travel sized yellow cover copy, but heck, Clinton wanted it banned all the way anyhow so beggers can't be choosers. Ha ha. Proud to add it to my engineering/survival library. Get one before the govt. makes them gone for good!

I'm still reading it ,theres a lot of information in this book. Deffinately a good read, although I won't need the information it is interresting. If I were to use the info. though the safety notes are worth the pirce of the book. After reading just the first quarter of this book I can easily say I don't ever want to build a boom, far to many risks. I like my hands to much!

Neat to read, but you'll never do any of this. Newsflash, you are not James Bond. Even so, most guys like to browse this kind of thing.

This really doesn't teach anything, but it has some interesting parts, read it on the internet

A cool book. Some of the schematics are hard to follow.
