The art of Kiyoshi Saito takes us into a modest Japanese village, rows of traditional woodframe houses separated by persimmon trees and flower gardens. Saito (Japanese, 19071997) was born in Aizu, where little had changed as the rest of the nation underwent rapid modernization. A craving for this sort of tradition, wedded to a powerful creative impulse, led the young artist to leave his sign-making business and devote his life to art. He learned oil painting, but before long he gave it up in favor of printmaking. Working with unconventional tools, determined to master all steps of a craft commonly divided among drafting, carving, and printing specialists, and unfamiliar with the practice of color separation, Saito began making his one-of-a-kind prints. Masterful Images: The Art of Kiyoshi Saito presents the story of this idiosyncratic artist's ascent to international success, as the American officers returning from postwar Japan brought with them prints and praise for an artist whose rustic work possessed an immediacy far from the refinement of a Hiroshige or Hokusai. A string of prizes in international art competitions attracted more interest, and soon Saito's shadowy images of temples, gardens, and winter streets appeared in museums and homes around the world. Travel and recognition brought new subjects as the artist lingered in France, Tahiti, Mexico, and India to capture scenes that appealed to his sensibility. Encompassing the full range of Saito's oeuvre, the 90 prints reproduced here are drawn from the collection of Canada's Art Gallery of Greater Victoria. Wonderful book of wonderful prints. Great reproductions, and gives you a great overview of his career.

Good survey of the work of a master.

It's great to have an affordable collection of Saito's prints. So good to see many of them in color. I'd like to see a somewhat more extensive collection, still in the affordable range, including more of the animals, especially the famous cats, and some prints from his time in Paris. This series of books is one of our LO's favorite. He'll cycle through handing me the Eye Book, Nose Book and the Ear Book and stay engaged through the whole thing. Fun book to read with your LO. I plan to add the Foot Book soon as well as others.

My great nephew loved it. Just like my grandchildren did. It makes it easy for kids to point and learn to say a word. I'm sure I'll buy more of this particular book, as another niece is expecting, and I wouldn't want her to be without it when she starts reading to the baby.

Great little book! Perfect for bedtime reading and compact enough to travel with. We've been reading this book to our daughter since she was under 1. She's almost 2.5 now and still loves it.

Fun book for 1.5 y/o. She enjoys the rhyme and repetition. Minus one star for "pink eye, pink eye." There are so many better adjectives that could have been used!!

I hope we never forget.

A few good men to say the least. Finally now Americans honor Vietnam vets. I was always ashamed of civilians calling them baby killers. We owe them so much.

Unparalled insight as to the sacrifice and love of country and God that so many gave so that we have the freedom of nowhere else.... at least, for a while. Never Forget,

The Real Truth. The Baby Killer's were the VA and the NVA not Americans. I know some of these coward here tried to blame the American Soldiers, calling them Barbarians and Baby Killers, on and on. Read this book and get educated to the truth of every day life for the American Soldiers.

Okay. Not as complete or easy to use as the Lonely Planet guide. Would not buy again.

DK format is to provide detailed info about "every city". Harder to get an overview for trip planning. I found more helpful info online (free!) and ended up NOT taking this book to NZ with me

We found the descriptions of historic and cultural background to many of the locales and sites we wanted to visit to be very useful. The descriptions in some cases helped us to prioritize just which attractions we would visit, especially where time was constrained. We found that all the information from the Guide that we used was reliable. The photos and displays provided good advance information that helped us set our expectations. Certain details such as entry charges, restaurant information and prices, precision of location, were best filled in from other travel guides that pay more attention to such details. All told,, it was a great asset for us to have the sorts of information provided by the DK Guide.

Like all the Eyewitness Guides, the New Zealand guide is great. Full of photos, illustrated maps, lots of recommendations of things to see and do. The only thing that isn't perfect is that the vast number of photos and maps makes it necessary to limit the amount of detailed information, but I got another guide that fills that purpose.

These are excellent books. I always buy DK Eyewitness, and this NZ version doesn't disappoint. The pictures are great. The history sections are interesting.

I own SEVERAL of the DK Eyewitness series travel guides. You can't beat the photos and graphics these books include.

This book had some good information, but I found more information about places to eat, local foods to try, and more detailed places to go on the internet than I did in this book.
