Another Country is an outstanding, valuable book for anyone who is concerned about parents or grandparents who are aging and need help. The book is beautifully written - it's a New York Times best seller. Pipher, a clinical psychologist, is knowledgeable about seniors and researched this subject extensively. She comments on the fact that our culture has changed dramatically - people are living longer yet our culture worships youth; families live at great distances from each other leaving grandparents isolated and alone.Pipher offers many vignettes of adult children and their aging parents. Some of these stories demonstrate the helpfulness of a counselor in thinking through tough family decisions and in solving contentious family relationships.Pipher invites us to overcome our aversion to thinking and talking about death and helps us understand elders. She says adult children live in "different time zones" from their parents and this causes difficulty understanding each other. Throughout the book she emphasizes the need for intergenerational community and offers ways to implement this. There is a wealth of information here for all generations to learn from and put to use in their relationships with each other. It is also a delightful book to read.

This book is for anyone who is curious about how different cultures age. More importantly, it opens our eyes to why certain habits and beliefs are products of when we were born and what is going on in the world as we grow up. This book allows one to take a step back from the entangled relationships we sometimes have with our parents, siblings, and people of cultures different from our own. It delves into why "The old don't want to be dependent in our dependent phobic culture." vs other cultures which embrace and respect the wisdom of the elderly. America has become a fast-paced, technologically-focused culture. It is for the youth of today who become the elderly of tomorrow. A well-written book that will open your eyes and your hearts to being more appreciative for the wealth of experiences and accumulative knowledge our aging society has lived.

I feel I owe large debt of thanks to Another Country.It's been years since I've taken a highlighter pen to a book (college!), but this one has already taught me many ways to rethink my relationship with my parents as they age. The case studies and explanations reflect a lot of what I've been feeling. I believe I can refer back to them often for help and guidance. Mary Pipher's done for caregivers what she accomplished for adolescent girls in "Reviving Ophelia," and has my utmost respect as a writer and as a person.I guess I'm writing this as the voice of at least one more person who is definitely dealing with intergenerational problems. Elder care is as much of a family issue as child care--if not more so, since everyone has parents and not everyone chooses to have children. It's nice to know we're not alone.

Real concerns of elderly people are described and addressed, based on clinical experience. Shortage of real studies of aging issues is noted, not many solutions proposed. Therapists are useless to elderly folks unless they have had experience and training---which is lacking in all venues. Amazing and callous that no org., not even AARP, is trying to bring counselors for elders up to speed.

Everyone should read this. If you are getting ready to possibly care for an elder, or you are a thirty something who would appreciate some guidance on what to expect with your parents who are probably entering the early stages of being elderly. It will make you cry and laugh. I absolutely loved her writing style. It had clinical evaluations but read like a novel.

Fascinating, hopeful, and informative, Ms. Pipher has done it again. Writing about a complicated and often difficult stage in life, I read this for my relatives and, ultimately, for myself and what to expect if I live long enough. A must-read for anyone care-giving an elder or who happens to be an elder themselves. With a language and world all its own, aging is now less of a mystery to this reader.

This book was a requirement for my class "Working With The Elders." As a child growing up in the south I could relate to many of the author'swriting and experiences. Mary Pipher interviewed many of the persons she mention in her book. This is a must read book.

I like it, yes and no. Could only read the first part -- which seemed researched and accurate -- but too depressing for what's going to happen to most older people. I guess I'll just wait til it happens and not get myself upset ahead of time. As my daughter says, "Wait to worry."

Probably a little simple for those who are studying hard but I wanted a set of flash cards and this is a set of flash cards! I have since started making my own from my own list of words. They can be made with Power Point or, in my case, a short PERL script to make linked HTML pages. The versions that require you to be online are not satisfactory for me since I wanted to use these while flying. The book doesn't start the flash card sequence until about 1/3 of the way through but it does have a lot of flash cards.

I'm a rank beginner in learning Spanish, so take that into consideration. On the plus side, I'm a rank beginner in learning Spanish. I've been looking for something simple and straightforward to use in getting accustomed to Spanish nouns and verbs, and this is the best I've found so far. It also contains adverbs and adjectives, by the way. Each word is presented in its Spanish form with a pronunciation guide (not with weird marks but in a way that an English speaker can understand) and a brief definition for the word. Nice and concise. I actually started with Rosetta Stone but quickly got frustrated at not having a convenient way to learn a little more about each word, and this seems so far to be a good back up for the Rosetta Stone exercises.

For people who are trying to make the Spanish language their second language, this is a most useful tool. Even if you have only a few minutes a day you can go through one section of flash cards to test your knowledge and pronunciation. This tool is especially effective because the instructor is Spanish speaking and a teacher. He grew up with the language. I have several core texts that help with Spanish and the flash card fits well with them. It's sight ,sound, writing, and practice that makes you fluent, and comfortable. Dictionaries and translators are nice to have , but of little use if you don't recognize the correct word and pronunciation.

Just a bunch of words on a page. nothing you couldn't find on the net.

Well worth the price. It starts with a quick summation of pronunciation, followed by a glossary divided by word type. I was disappointed thinking this was the flash cards. But eventually you get there. My only wish is they had done them both ways. I wanted to read the English and state the Spanish translation. Why not both ways?But, if you are learning the language, this is a great quick practice on a plane that you can refer back to repeatedly and quickly. I finished in one quick plane ride and will now refer back on other plane rides. One of the many tools to use to learn languages particularly in Kindle. I like it.

Flashcards? These are not flashcards! It's just a long list of words! Then it says if you want the "bonus" of flashcards (- "bonus"?! That what I paid for), we have to go to his site an download it in pdf. What a rip off. I want my money back.

A plethora of information to read and take in. I do recommend this as a supplement to audio lessons as well as immersion into this beautiful and easy to learn language. This book has helped so much in my progression!

It's probably too soon to be writing the biography of James Packer who is barely past 50 with many productive years and many more interesting adventures ahead of him. In some ways he is the poor little rich boy and in others he is the supremely talented but angst ridden billionaire business tycoon. The book does a good job of pulling the curtain back and revealing how and why James has conducted his life and business affairs, warts and all. I think I would have enjoyed the book more if it had been written in a more chronological style. Instead, we jump around back and forth in time quite a bit. Being a long time Las Vegan I was particularly interested in those parts of the book dealing with James' business dealings here. I would have liked to learn more about them. They were all spectacular failures which almost brought his whole business down, but very little information was discussed regarding why the decisions he made were made. Overall I found the book to be entertaining and it seemed to be even handed in telling the story without a lot of puffery. I found it definitely worth the time and effort to read and would recommend it to anyone looking for a biography of a contemporary businessman.

While aspects of the Packer family, particulalry Kerry, were interesting and detailed, I found that by midway it had become repetitive. The same details and major events were outlined half a dozen times.

Throughout the book you can see the author truly cared about his subject and wanted to tell his story in context.

This book failed to tell a story. It didn't follow a clear timeline, it didn't dig into the awkward relationships or seem that balanced in its reporting. Instead, it came across as positive publicity for Packer, full of name dropping and a list of dollars made or lost.

I thought the book was well written and the author obviously has an extensive background in food science. In a nutshell - her eating plan is high protein, low carb, moderate fat. No gluten, no dairy, no sugar, no soy, no processed food. Her philosophy is that in order to keep blood sugar levels stable throughout the day, she recommendeds 3 meals per day and ideally no snacks. Each meal contains a "Fab Four" ingredient- protein, fat, fiber and greens. Fruit is limited to 1/4-1/2 cup of berries per day. All other fruits may be eaten once or twice a week. - again only a very small portion of 1/2 cup or less. Grains are limited to gluten free and only 1/4 - 1/2 cup per day at most. Breakfast is essentially a protein shake made with water or nut milk with the addition of 1-2 Tbsps of fat (MCT oil, coconut oil, nuts or avocado), and 1-2 Tbsps of fiber (chia seeds, flax, avocado), and a handful of greens such as spinach.Will you lose weight, feel good, and be healthy eating like this? Yes - most likely! However, it is pretty restrictive and requires a lot of discipline.

The book as a whole was OK. It was a bit repetitive...alright, it was a lot repetitive. I think the entire book could have been summed up in an article, not so much an entire book. I ended up skipping paragraphs and certain pages here and there just to get through it all. I did, however, really enjoy the science aspect of knowing how the body reacts to certain foods. I’m intrigued to see if the “Fab Four” smoothies really work as well as she constantly insists they will. Wish me luck!

Stop counting calories and read this book. All I have done is used her formula for a balanced meal and incorporated her smoothies for my breakfast and I have never felt better and I have lost 17 lbs in 3 weeks. I am satisfied with my meals. I don't feel like I'm dieting (because I am not) and it was easy. The book itself is very technical but taking the time to read and understand it was totally worth it. This book combine with kitchen matters, whole30 and primal kitchen have helped pave the way with easy, delicious meals. With the investment. I have been able to totally reprogram my body. Saying no to pizza is easy because I don't want it anymore! If you are looking for a game changer. This is it.

So I will update this review, but I have to say I am so thrilled I found this book.Due to a lot of stressful and traumatic life events my weight has been up and down the past 2 years due to stress eating tons of sugar. I found the Whole30 (which I still think is great) which has helped to reset me in the past. However, I haven't been able to successfully recommit to a whole30 despite numerous efforts due to how restrictive it is. So I tried weight watchers which hasn't helped because I'm just too hungry and stressing over every point I'm using. I'd then feel deprived and overeat.Finally this is something that meets halfway. It provides guidelines for how to eat. She discusses smoothies a lot, but this isn't your only option. The smoothie is simply a shortcut and since I don't have quick healthy food options in my neighborhood, this is a great alternative. She promises that you won't feel hungry.Today is my first day drinking a Fab Four smoothie for breakfast. I drank it around 6:30 this morning and 3 hours later I'm genuinely not hungry. Normally I'd start to feel hungry not long after breakfast and need a snack. I'm hoping to make it until noon for lunch. Kelly says meals should keep you satisfied for 4-6 hours.I will update this as the week progresses and see how my weight changes. So excited!Unfortunately after two weeks of drinking these smoothies every day, I'm not really losing any weight. I was super excited for that to happen but it's not. So I guess I will have to find something else 😥

The idea of this book is very good but it is chaotic and difficult to follow. The teenage "Hey, Girlfriend!" language in the book was a bit off-putting. As I said, some good ideas and advice for healthy eating but it needs to be presented in a more organized manner.

Displayed the conflicts between government and private business enterprise. Coupled with Eric Prince's own book, spells out what has occurred. Having had a relative working with a Blackwater operation rhyme and reason become self evident. Worth your time to read and draw your own conclusions...

Interesting

As I have been following the world of PSCs and especially Blackwater for years already and writing my master thesis about it, it was a nice insight from the opposite side to read what happened and why which decisions were taken. You have to be interested in this topic, but if you are: the book is a must! Do take care not to take everything for granted and read critical.

Uncritical, pseudo-biographical puff-piece in book form. Not quite hagiographic, but certainly fawning."M.o.W." is also missing the serious strategic analysis that, while probably more likely to contribute to a less-flattering narrative for Prince and his firm (especially in the context of corrupt government contracting), would've generated some historical value for the book. Another reader notes, "Blackwater started with $200,000 in contracts in 2000, and ended up with over $1 billion income in the next seven years. Simons explains very little of how that occurred." HBS won't pull a case-study out of this text...Looking back on "M.o.W." post-Snowden, in the age of Greenwald and Poitras when they're at the height of their professional power, success and relevance, this book seems to be the antithesis of real investigative journalism. It reads like something one would expect from a strategic/crisis communications firm."A CNN producer and anchor, Suzanne Simons is the first journalist to get deep inside Blackwater—and, as a result of her unprecedented access..." <===== says it all. "M.o.W." = "access-journalism", not investigative journalism. Meh.Nevertheless, given that you can buy a brand-new hardback version for $1.84 (+ $3.99 shipping), it's ok."Master of War" is literally a sub-$2 book.

Enjoyed the start of the book regarding Erik's drive and focus to create the company. Seemed to become a little dull during parts however finished quite well in outlining the companies slow down due to reputation and politics. Would recommend the read if you are wanting to understand more about Erik or Blackwater.
